I just had a bit of a shock!! I took some shots with the 40d with picture styles on just as a tester... and used the mono with a red filter. all shots came out in black and white looking great.

Now, I know that DPP (supplied with the camera) will enable changing of picture styles after the event.... but when I opened the shots in Lightroom... as I clicked on each black and white thumbnail it immediatly changed to colour. :S

Does this mean that not only is DPP the only software where you can fiddle about with your picture styles afterwards... but if you have used one 'in-camera' you cannot keep the style when using other software???

Don't forget you are shooting RAW, and any software won't touch the original. It'll "process" you instructions and then output a new file with those instructions implemented. The original stays intact.

Some software will take your instructions and write them to an additional file, called a sidecar. Unfortunately not all software will talk or read other software sidecars, although I believe that Lightroom sidecars can be read,( now) by Photoshop.

I've not used DPP for a long while , being a Capture one user before Lightroom, so I don't know if you can export the DPP settings as sidecars, or if other software will read them if you can

Best scenario is export your images as tiffs or jpegs and then work on them in that format.

Or you could make your own preset and use that, or borrow someone else's. There are loads on the web. this site has it claims 85 of the little darlings

I shoot in RAW & JPG. So I have the edit I saw on the screen, and the original RAW incase I want to tweak it myself. Sometimes the camera comes out with a far more satisfying result though.
