Digital error

What has caused my photos to break up into a small number of cubist-like blocks? The effect is like a "Rubick's Square" (as distinct from a Rubick's Cube!).
It has only ever happened a couple of times, from a SmartMedia card. Are the photos recoverable?

Sounds like a dodgy write operation from the camera *or* card when taking the photo.

I would have thought that if it's like that when viewing direct from the card, it's gone for good I'm afraid, as it usually happens when writing the image to the card.
