digital backgrounds

Does anyone have any links to tutorials or suggestions for making half decent ones?

I'm wanting motely backgrounds, but TBH mine all look crap so keep shutting PS down in a huff...

I'm sure I posted one on here a while back (found it) it's made using the clouds filter and free transform, I make a 10x8 with the clouds filter (choose your 2 colours before you start) then draw a rectangle over a bit less than a quarter and use transform to drag it over the full size of the image (that makes the pattern bigger) then I used the lighting options to make the hot spot.
