North England Different Living location

Hi All just a general question really....

Me and the Mrs was having a conversation the other morning, Basically around if you could live any where else in the UK where would you live and why (Not where you currently Live).

We are currently living in Greater Manchester

My reply was The Lake District


For a few reasons....

  1. Great For the outdoors with the kids
  2. Great location for the rest of the Family to Visit
  3. Good for our hobbies
  4. Just close enough to get back to see our families
  5. Great for Photography
  6. fairly Close to the coast

Where would your location be and why???
 
The northen Highlands or Orkney.

Not overcrowded.
No traffic jams (usually), except sheep ☺
Great scenery and wildlife.
No light pollution, and the possibility to see the Merry Dancers.
Good sea and game angling.
Never too hot ☺

I love the lake district but it can get a little busy and I think that would frustrate me if I lived there.

Far north of Scotland for me.

That said, I'd be very happy with a remote part of Northumberland.
 
Edinburgh.

Great city with loads to do.
Airport to get away if need be.
Not too far to get away for some solitude.

Only downside is that Nicola Sturgeon ....

Absolutely awful place to live.
Over priced housing all snapped up by southern retirement folk.
Full of grockles.
Full of traffic.
Full of "lifestyle" idiots.
Little solitude - tripper season lasts from Valentine's Day to end of November.
Nowhere to park.
The magic soon goes and you fail to se the beauty of the place.

Yes. Its full of either trippers or those who think that it's a nice place to live.
Visit it by all means but keep out of the central areas between Easter and October half term.
You live what? 90 mins away from Ambleside?
The other man's grass and all that.
 
The coast of the north west of Scotland

Reasons -

The mountains, lochs and sea
The weather - even when it is bad it is often amazing and when it is good (which is much more frequent than many folks think) it is brilliant but also not too hot
The wildlife
The space
The long summer evenings and the really dark nights
The helpfulness of the people (though I suspect the people in any quiet more gently paced area are the same).

I'd happen to agree to be honest. The idea of living there is great but you'd only really appreciate it if you was off the beat and track in a single cottage some place without anyone else for miles. Then when you try and do anything - like shopping - you would be frustrated by how long it takes to get to the shops and when you get there there's no where to park for 9months of the year. I rented for a fortnight to test the water and it was great for a few days and that was it. Staying as a local vs staying as a tourist is vastly different.
