Hi All
Having a great time playing with my new camera. There's a shot iam to take but can't get it to work , so thought I would ask.

I live on an estuary and you can see the hills on the other side about a mile away. I have taken some good shots of this view.

I also like taking shots of a rock on the beach it's almost a perfect cube. Especially if the breakers usually about 30 meters away are crashing causing spray as a back drop.

What I have been trying to do is get the Boulder at say 10 meters away the breakers at 30 meters away and the mountains the other side of the estuary say 1 mile away all in focus.

Is it possible , is it my lens or my know how that's the issue . Can get 2 out of three Boulder and sea or sea and mountains but not all three.

Cheers
John

Yep, pretty easy tbh. With a wide angled lens you should be able to get anything from 1-2m away right up to infinity in focus. (This example shows an 18mm lens on a crop body at f8 will give you focus from 1.12m to infinity)

You've got all the help you need above, so I'll just add:

Are you sure?

Front to back sharpness rarely makes for an interesting image, you're actually talking about creating an image with 3 distinct subjects, what do you want the viewer to look at?

I'd agree with the last comment. By all means go for the boulder and breakers in focus, with an outline of the far mountains against the horizon as a recognisable but out of focus background.

But if you're serious wanting all in focus, then go for the suggestion of
  • small aperture
  • focus on the breakers
  • accept that the boulder & mountains won't be quite as supersharp as the breakers (which themselves will have motion blur due to slow shutter speed)
