Yes
I need root canal and my dentist is quoting about £2000 which seems high even when I compare with other UK dentists, I see clinics offering the same from a few hundred quid, even with flights and hotels and considering I get a city break as well I'm thinking of going abroad.

Does anyone have any real world experience of going for dental treatment abroad? How was it? Where did you go?

I knew a contractor some years ago who went to Thailand for a bunch of work who thought it was great, but I don't know specifics. I personally would be happier staying in Europe for such things. My sympathies though

Yes was thinking about Europe / Turkey, still a hell of a lot cheaper than UK

problem you got is if there is a problem you will end up paying twice
suck it up and have it done in the UK

my stepdaughter just had a wisdom tooth taken out in china. Had xrays and it taken out for just over £100 in about 15 minutes. Very well equipped and modern dentist, not some tent out on the street either :)

About fifteen years ago, I had a tooth break while on a plane to Austria.

When we got to Seefeld, our friends at our usual hotel recommended a dentist in the town, who did an emergency repair for a surprisingly reasonable price. He suggested seeing our usual dentist when we got home. We did so, to be told that the repair was good enough to leave as is.

It's still there, happily doing nothing.

I'm going for a first appointment with our new dentist in Northern Ireland next week - I'll enquire how much they charge for this as it does seem excessive.

Bit far to go for a filing?

NHS should not be that much?

Shop around here but your mouth is important - and risks of long term pain. Buy cheap and its not good, it could cause a a lot of pain and damage, and cost more to fix

Where i live not a chance unless you have been registered with them for years.
people camp out when a dentist announces spaces

My local one has done that, but only because I was dating the hygienist I got to know about it! But I would have expected most people to have been registered with an NHS dentist - I did 20+ years ago

My dentist has just decided to strong arm its clients into taking out a care plan. Prices are still going up, mind you, but if you don't subscribe they will go up substantially. I don't know about you, but that sounds a bit like blackmail to me.

If people can get a dental plan via work its a good thing to get - the tax you pay on it should be gained back through checkups and hygienist visit, so any other stuff like crowns will be almost free.

My dentist stopped NHS treatment a couple of years ago, along with most other dentists round here.

And this is down to the governments not making it viable for dentists to do NHS work.

yep for sure NHS dentists are on like 40k in the private sector its like 120k for a 4 day week what would you do?
my wife (recently retired) was a private dental hygienist and that was £55 for half an hour and she was cheep.

I don't think anybody can really answer the OP's question. Services very so much abroad as they do in this country. The only person I know who went abroad to have some dental work done in Poland. Actually went to the same dentist they had seen a year earlier in the UK.

I assume you've done some research and are aware of the dangers. It's not being a pessimist..doom and gloom.. but a sensible way forward. After reading this article below I don't think I'd want to go to Turkey..On the other hand, choose carefully and it would be ok but how to do that is the challenge . I heard several callers to LBC Radio last week relating horror stories about what are called 'bum lifts' (for females)carried out in Turkey Quite often the NHS are left to pick up the pieces..literally, I think. If your root canal treatment goes wrong I'm not sure you would be able to get an NHS dentist to rectify it as Mr Bump has pointed out and it would be expensive going through a private dentist.

Here's what I've found. One aspect that would bother me, that is highlighted in the link below, is that in Turkey they don't have a trade body like the British Dental Association that regulate standards and also because of that there's no redress.

Within that article is reference to an investigation by the BBC..https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0019gps
From the article.
Many patients who have had Turkey Teeth have suffered complications, such as sensitive teeth, the crowns or veneers falling out, infected gums, and sometimes even intense, long-lasting pain.

..and this...Then there’s the added frustration of having nowhere to turn to – in Turkey there’s no trade body like the British Dental Association (BDA) to ensure high standards and ethical practices. And as an additional kick in the teeth, many UK dentists won’t touch patients who are having problems as a result of botched dental work.

It's a tough one when it costs so much. One practice here in Gloucester shows root canal is.. "from". ..£450. I know it will cost a lot more than that.

Another practice charges... from ..£1250 ..incisor canine .. Premol Molar £1450 Molar £1350 Removal of post. £350..

One more practice here..also 'from'

Incisors
. . .
From £488.00
Premolars
. . .
From £550.00
Molars
. . .
From £732.00

I don't think you can research costs around the country because each practice would want you to register, have X-rays,have a check up.

I think I'll get a mate with a pair of pliers. :D

I always go to my vet. Much cheaper for me. He does a good job too considering. The only issue i have going there is having a to share a cage!!

My dentist is shying away from NHS, they say that they can actually lose money on the NHS stuff due to inadequate payments. If true then I can't really blame them.

Hasn't Turkey got a bit of a rep?... :D

My concern about going abroad for treatment is that the phrase "Turkey Teeth" is coming into common use to describe dental work that has gone wrong. I don't doubt there are many very good dentists in lower cost areas but how can you be sure you are getting one?

One of my daughters went to turkey about 3 years ago had all her teeth removed and implants put back on place . It required two visits over a 3 month ? Period to allow time for the gums to settle , apparently it was all good with clean efficient surgery’s and she had the bonus of two holidays in hotels of her choice . They do look nice though and it was a very good price .

I think people going to cheap places abroad to save money are crazy. Dental work if done badly will leave you in pain for life.

If you are having dental implants do you know what kind they use? How long they will last? If they drop out after a few years then what?

Shop around in the UK. Find a specialist that does just the type of treatment you need. Then you get someone that does it all day every day and has seen every complication. Implants are a surgical procedure as far as I can tell so you want them done properly. I can't imagine all the Turkey dentists are first class private dentists which is the level you need if you are going to risk someone that isn't in your same country and subject to your laws if it goes wrong.

Suppose the benefit of having false teeth is I could stick them in a padded envelope and post them.
