Ok for those of you who don't know how the US political machine works what it does mean is that while Bush will remain President it will be much harder for him to actually do anything without the House of Representatives to back him. Democrats may also win control of the Senate but we are still waiting for a recount. The House is kinda like your House of commons and the Senate is more like the the Lords but not really.... Anyway if you are at all interested here is a link http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/11/08/election.main/index.html

Is there a reason the President is not elected at the same time as the rest of them? Seems daft that he will stay there but be in the smaller party for another year or more.

Ok quick American lesson!

The House of Representatives:

A Representative is re-elected every 2 years. This is staggered throughout the states so you never have an all new House of Representatives, I guess to add some sort of stability. So there is actually an election that happens every year in one state or another. Representatives are decided by population so states like NY, California, and Texas have allot of them but states like Vermont only have one.

Senate:

These people are elected for 6 years which means this is the first time the Senate has come up for re election since Bush has become President. Matter of fact I worked on Hillary Clinton's campaign the first time around. Each state only gets 2 of these no matter what size they are. Senators are considered the more powerful because of the length of service and the fact that there is only two of them. This means there are only 100 voting members of the Senate (there are actually more senators because of Puerto Rico and Washington DC but they don't get a vote).

Hope that helped!

Hardly seems right to me. Does this mean George Dubbya wont be able to decide who he's gonna invade in a morning any more? :D

Just got back off exercise on SPTA to read an email from an American friend - she's dancing round her flat still...

They got the Senate too now ... apparently ...:D

But who gives one ... really ...:naughty:

Bloody politicians are all the same ... whatever colour (politically speaking !) ... :suspect:

Well not only did we (Democrats) win both the House and the Senate we got Dubya to get rid of Rummy!!!!!!!!!!!! I was so happy I really did cry when I heard the news on the way home yesterday. I called my hubby (who's in the Army) and he let out a whoop of joy. Now maybe we can get the propper amount of people and equipment.

Yeah Donald really was a 1st Class ***** - I don't know anyone in the US Military who had a good thing to say about that one...

Maybe I can actually live in that country again.

That is what my husband said. I'll wait to the next presidential election before I come to any sort of real decision.
