dell xps 8500 update issue

hi guts i have a dell xps 8500 with an i5 processor running windows 8
the problem i have is the pc runs perfectly but when i let it do a windows update it fails to reboot, it just hangs
none of the windows 8 utilities that repair etc will work with it, except one diagnosis one that says all tests passed
i have been on to dell and they are going to send an engineer out and assume he will firstly reinstall windows 8
any of you knowledgeable pc people have any ideas

there is an error log somewhere, it will tell you what update is messing up so you can remove it..dont ask where the log is though as i have no idea
