After buying the Dell monitor I now would like to calibrate it....It came with a calibration certificate and to be honest its not bad, better than other monitors I have had out the box - but I just want to be satisfied its correct so has anyone had any experience with this monitor and calibrator did you get good results or was it a marginal improvement on the factory setting>? I am happy with it as is...but would like to see how good it gets.

How often does this need to be done as well.

its generally said to ignore the factory calibration (im sure pookyhead will be along shortly to explain the detail behind that) and do it with a hardware appliance asap.

once a month should be fine.

Once a month....is that the normal frequency for calibration - why would it "go off" so soon?

The factory caibration is pretty poor to be honest.. they always are. I tested the Dell factory calibration on a U2410, and also on a U2413 and it was a max Delta E of around 4 with an average of just under 2. Anything greater than 2 is considered out of calibration. After calibrating with the i1 you can expect a max Delta E of around 1 or so., with an average around 0.3. Sometimes you'll struggle to get the Max Delta E less than 1, and it will usually be the blacks causing the issue as LCDs can't ever produce a pure black.

TFT Central's findings are in keeping with my own too.

Those are the results after measuring Dells "factory calibration" on a U2713HM. Average Delta E of 1.8 and a max of more than 4 is shockingly bad. Also, luminance of 222cd/m2 is hugely bright.. white point is out too.

Here's the same screen after calibrating.

That was using the LaCie Blue Eye Pro software with a i1 Pro, but if anything, the i1 Display Pro software is better still.

You mention the i1 Display Pro. Do you have this yet? It's a pity you didn't get the H version instead of the HM as that can be hardware profiled, but even so, calibrating properly with the i1, even at software level will be a great improvement over the factory calibration.

Even if the factory calibration was perfect, it will drift any way, so it wouldn't remain perfect for long. I calibrate every 200 hours use, and I can see the effects of that drift after such use.

Does the U2711 have H and HM versions? (in other words can the 2711 be hardware profiled?)

The U2711 can not be hardware profiled, no.

Thanks David.

I find it tricky locating accurate info on Dell's website, so just to be clear - if the 2711 is profiled with a hardware device the resulting LUT is controlled by the PC's graphics card and not by the monitor itself. Is that right?

The later U2713 model seems to be the other way round (i.e. LUT is controlled by the monitor).

I can recommend a Spyder4Pro with the dispcalGUI open source software. Gives me great results.

What would you use to calibrate?

A calibrator like any other monitor.. Color Munki, i1 etc.. that's not what hardware calibration means. It means when you calibrate, you are programming the monitor itself, instead of teh graphics card, which is what happens usually. It's more accurate that way. Not all monitors support direct programming of their LUT (Look Up Table).

Thanks David.

That is correct, yes.

The U2413 and U2713 can be hardware profiled, but ONLY with the Dell software, and ONLY with the i1 Display Pro.
