Dell IPS Monitor U2211H ???

Hey Guys,

I have just purchased a Dell IPS U2211H Monitor.

Currently using a basic cheap one.

Can anyone tell me firstly will it make a big difference?

Are they a good monitor?

More of a impulse buy!!

It was £200 with 3Yr Next Day Replacement Warranty. Even if it's a single dead pixel.

Plus being IPS, Sounded like a bargain??
 
You should find it an excellent monitor,I have the 2311 and its great.
But you might find it a bit bright to start with.
These are the settings I use on mine.
Brightness: 30
Contrast: 75
Input Color Format: RGB
Mode Selection: Graphics
Sharpness: 50
Dynamic Contrast: Off
Response time: Overdrive
RGB: Custom
• R: 99
• G: 95
• B: 98
I cant remember where they came from but It was from a document on optimum settings before calibration.

I have the 30" version of this monitor
It is a lovely panel. I have it next to a conventional 22" Samsung TN Panel and to be honest I was expecting much bigger differences!
The difference between viewing angle is alot less than I was expecting.
The IPS panel is definitely more true when it comes to working with photographs etc though. There was a massive difference in colour profiles between the two, but calibration has meant there is little difference.
The Dell is also a lot sharper.
 
I found dell monitors crap - I had to return the last one three times - and they were all bad. I'm now happy with an NEC PA271W - what a world of a difference. Dell is history.
 
Cheers Guys, I have since done some homework and it has great reviews.
For £210 delivered with 3 Yr Next Day replacement warranty, even if a single pixel dies seems pretty reasonable for a IPS monitor.

The warranty stated on Dell's website: "Perfection down to the last pixel:... even one bright, defective pixel"

Which isn't the clearest.. does this include dead pixels or just stuck bright pixels? If it's just any dead/stuck pixel why put in 'bright' instead of just putting it as 'even one defective pixel' ??
Anyone clear this up?

It doesn't include dead pixels, only 'bright' or stuck pixels.
 
Matt - you made a good choice .The IPS screens... once you have one thats it, you'll never go back to TN. Mine 23 was well calibrated out the box, prints come back near identical to screen.
 
I have a 2209WA Dell monitor and it's plenty good. Sure an NEC or Eizo would be better, but for the cost I just couldnt justify it

likewise ive got 2 2209WA's and theyre both flawless panels (granted one has a dead power LED but MEH).

would still recommend getting a hardware calibrator like a spyder to get the best out of any screen.

Point well made though I have to say I look after the hardware at our workplace, we use Dell almost exclusively, and I've had to send at least 40% of our various 24" (IPS) monitors back under the three year warranty period.
Ghosting (looks like a horizontal smudge) and power buttons getting stuck appear to be the main failures but they're priced accordingly.

On the flipside we have a small number of Eizo ColorEdge's and they're perfect in every way, they also have a harder life too.

You pays your money and takes your chance!
 
I too have the 2311. Love it! Aria seem to always have a deal on them too :)
 
Monitor arrived today. First impression is Build Quality is awesome.
I hooked it up and Calibrated it with Spyder 2 Pro at 2.2 6500 it did not like it.
Then tried recalibrating it again at 2.2 Native and it seemed ok.
However, my only concern is the brightness (Which is Backlight) is 55%.
Will this make Pure whites look dark?
Also after buying pretty good monitor and calibrating it im still not confident its color correct
 
I run my U2210s at around 18% brightness and 50% contrast. Calibrated by a Eye One to give 120 Lumens...

Target was: 2.2 6500
Actual: 2.2 6578 (Close enough)

White Luminance Target: 125
White Luminance Ctual 125.5 (Close enough)

My Monitor is: 58% Brightness/Backlight and Contrast is: 75% (Factory Default)

Looks ok, But thinking now it may be too bright?
 
i have a pair of 2311's and love em massive improvement over my TN panel i had before.
Im sure you will get used to yours very quickly. My monitors were a bit warm out the box. A simple calibration sorted that!
 
best thing to do would be to get a couple of test prints done, originally my spyder wanted to set my screens to 180 lu. and i found prints were coming back quite dark.

now i have it set for 120 lu and things are much better.

All sorted, running lum at 120. Perfect for ambient lighting.

What did you use to calibrate, i have this monitor, the red is too saturated at default for skin tones, i have not touched it out of the box, but i am going to have to do something. I am not very techy minded though, so keep putting it off.

Hi,

I used Spyder2Pro calibrating software.
However the Spyder3 is better.

Make sure Adobe Gamma is not running in background. Reset Monitor to Factory Default. Use Calibrating Software and set
It to White Luminance Target 120. You can let the software adjust your colours or adjust them at the hardware (Monitor) RGB values. Target I think is around 6500.

To be honest just follow onscreen instructions you will be fine.

Thanks very much, I will get one bought, and get it done, at the mo everyone has a real orange sun tan, especially when models have quick tan.:eek:
