Hi all,

after inheriting my dads Minolta x700 (which i love to bits), i'm getting a bit fed up with not being able to just plug it in to my pc, and have decided to upgrade to a dslr.

I've got a little one on the way, so money is a bit tight at the moment, and due to the fact that i'm only a hobbyist i dont really think i need to go too mad.

I've done plenty of snooping around and have tried to find the cheapest deals available.

1. Pentax K100D with 18-55mm lens (£299.99)
2. Olympus E500 with 17-45mm lens (£245)
3. Olympus E330 with 14-45mm lens (£299)

i'd rather keep the price under £300, and i would just like peoples opinons on these 3 cameras please! I dont know what else to mention!

Well ive just upgraded from a old 35mm Minolta to DSLR and i got a Olympus E400 and its brilliant but thats out of your price range, just at £350.

I was going to get the Pentax at first and ive read nothing but good reviews about it.

Your best bet is looking at reviews. These are the ones i read

Pentax K100D

Olympus E500

Olmypus E330

Hope they help

i've done nothing but read reviews recently! I think that i've ditched the idea of the E330, im not really sure its such a step up from the E500 (the live view just seems like a bit of a gimmick), plus im also not so sure about the design.

i could possibly stretch up to £400, but i was thinking of putting the money i've saved towards some other kit. I have also looked at cameras over the £300 mark, including the E400, but would someone like me really benefit from the jump up from 8 to 10 megapixels?

I also looked at;

1. Olympus E500 with 14-45mm AND 40-150mm lenses for £350

2. Canon Eos 350D with 18-55mm lens for £379

3. Nikon D40X with 18-55mm lens for £399

Normally i would just splash out, but i'm determined to refrain myself this time.

I have the E500 kit that you mention above and I love it. I have however been an Olympus user for some time so am somewhat biased ;)

Go into a shop and have a feel of each of 'em before you make any decisions.

You won't regret going digital

just when i thought i had made my mind up!

just had a look at it on Tekmo and it says the cash back offer ISN'T available on the d40x?

Canon 350D :D Cant be beaten :p

:canon:

*disclaimer - it can be beaten, but its a very nice camera*

If mony is that tight you could do worse than get the silver sony alpha from argos for £299. At least then some of the lenses from your film camera should bolster your lens collection providing the X700 uses the normal minolta AF mount and not the MD or the other wierd one. Even if you buy one of the other cameras for £300 you'll only have one lens until you can save the cash for another. With the Sony you have a head start.

I am a Pentax K100D user, and I have to say I love it. Easy to use, great build quality and anti-shake functionality to boot.

A friend of mine uses the D40x and he is really happy with it (I realise this doesn't help), Let us kno which you go for.

lol, just typically my Minolta uses the MD mount lenses!

money is fairly tight, but the money i save on the camera itself will be going towards another lens (got my eye on a sigma 10-20mm, and the olympus is the only one you cant get it for!).

Think i might just put them in a hat and draw one!!!

A100 at Argos or £299? show me show me!

they have it for £379 from what i can see (which is still a great price). For £299 i could probably live with the silver!

think i'll nip in to my local one tomorrow as sometimes the full discounts only reveal themselves once you plug the code into those little blue machines!

Thanks mate, i realise that now, those Tekmo guys are telling us porkies.

I think we might have a winner. The lenses i would be interested in using are available, so it looks like its gonna be the D40x. For £319.99, its too good to turn down. Thanks for putting up with this thread, i know how indecisive i can be.....i was beginning to get on my own nerves!

The Olympus kit lenses stomp all over the the offerings by Canon and Nikon version. Your best bet is to invest in the E-500. The 4/3 system is very good. The Olympus range of lenses are great too.

King.

With the image files at 3x4 and "regular" printing at 2x3, surely this makes for a lot of cropping away?

Surely, sometime you will cut into somebody's arm or head where you would have wanted a good bit of b/g around said arm or head.

The only alternative is to shoot with a very loose crop:shrug:

Well, just to let you know i have gone for the........wait for it.......

Nikon D40X.

Got it (as described elsewhere, thanks alexis) from Dixons for £379.99 in delivery!

and with the £60 cashback the grand total will be £319.99!!! Bargain!
