Im trying to decide whether I should take the plunge and upgrade my camera or just get a better L series lens.

I have a canon 400d at the moment and was considering a 60d. For the lens Ive been looking at the canon 70-200mm L or the Tamron 70-300mm f4-5.6 SP Di VC USD.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

I'd upgrade the body personally. I went from a 400d to a 40d and it's in a different league.
Mind you I've since also bought a 7d and a 1diii so I'm not sure it was such a good move now.:D

I just went from a 350D to a 60D and have not regretted it one bit. Having said that, I also delved into my pockets and got an L lens not long after. If you're still shooting with a kit lens I'd say get the lens first. I have the Canon 70-200mm f4 IS and it's fabulous.

Based on the gear in your sig I would say 70-200 lens, unless you want/need the video features on the 60D.
