Hi

So im guessing a lot of you buy a monthly Photography magazine of some kind :)

which ones would you rate and which ones are not so good??

cheers

Interesting question, i think if you search the forum you'll see quite a few threeads on the subject, most recycle the content every 12 months or so, so you wont need to subscribe for too long.
I have purchased a few but the only ones that hold my attention these days are:

Outdoor Photographer
Amateur Photographer - Fortnightly, always seem to find great articles and new content.

Ahh ok :)

i bought Photography Monthly last week as it had a review of the Nikon 5100 that i wanted to read...seems an ok mag but nothing groundbreaking :)

you after photography, or camera magazines? Big difference :)

foto8 has some brilliant documentary photography in it. BJP magazine is always worth a read too.

errrm i dont really know :)

i enjoy the ones that tell you how to achieve different shots and suggest ideas etc

if you are a beginner just buy the one that has the best gift for a year subscription. they all pretty much cover the same thing year in year out

as mentioned all the "Digital xxxxx" mags seems to have a set content that they just rotate.

I dont get a monthly as there's a guy in the local market who sells old mags for 60p each so i just wait for them :) But i like the Black & White photography one a lot and i do subscribe to the british journal of photography which i find pretty interesting.

I find digital camera magazine to.be good. It gives good tips for beginners and more advanced with good photoshop tutorials. But I like it for the hotshots and portfolio stories of different photographers as I like seeing other peoples work too. With my subscription there isn't a free gift but its £32 per year for 13 editions which is very cheap as most mags are about a fiver its about 2 for 1 prices

If you do a google you will find several mags that offer promo subscriptions of a fiver for 6 months - worth a try for low outlay. Or you could just take a chair into WHSmith and have a quiet sit down and thumb through all their photo mags - will take a while as there are plenty of them but the staff do get p*ssed off after an hour or so of not even remotely looking as though you are going to buy anything :naughty:

I got a subscription to Practial Photography using Tesco Clubcard vouchers. It has a good balance of kit reviews and technique. Other than that I buy whatever back issues are for sale in the local market, usually 2-3 month old stock for £1 a copy.

I suscribe to Digital Camera mag too but make sure you tick the right box when ordering or you won't get a gift.

Also don't do it through the DVD either. That goes straight to a non gift subscription.

I played my face about the confusing system they use and they be-grudgingly sent me a Manfrotto monopod. Still a good mag though and well worth it.

Really getting into Professional Photographer - not that I consider myself to be.

Actually has articles I want to read rather than the usual tosh repeated too often.

And yes...I have bought them all at one time or another:shake:

I had 3 years of photography monthly through subscription. Very informative . But a years worth would suffice as they do tend to be quite repetitive . Not many stores stock it though.....

I used to buy Amateur Photographer ( have done since it was 9d, old money) but now there's too many ads, so for a few pence more at £2.99 I have bought a few copies of Digital SLR which I find very informative. I don't buy it regularly, just when there's something I particularly want to read or if I have nothing else to read. I'm sure though like all the others it will repeat itself eventually.

:lol:hi, I would try Digital Photo if you want some all round reviews of new gear, and tutorials and ideas for trying out some photoshop skills. I have sucscribed for a couple of years and like the disc tutorials that come with this as they are easy to follow unlike some of the heavy going manuals out there! There's always new gear to try out so I haven't felt that it's getting dated but you can subscribe for a year which makes it a bit cheaper, and theres a free gift for doing this!

Im new to photography and ive just signed up to a new magazine "Photography for beginners" it was £1 for 3 months. (so 3 magazines) then its £16(something) for a year.

If its too beginerish they also do a differant magazine i might sign up for.

I can never seem to find any in my local stores :(

Another new one that I'm really enjoying is "Practical Photoshop" - every month, it comes with a great DVD of tutorials. I've learned loads since I started reading it - and lots more practical projects and ideas than I ever got from any PS manual.

ive bought the last couple of copies of digital SLR photography and digital phot...oh and what digital camera last month and found them quite good, just trying to get to frips with shooting in manual and im keen to learn , both mags had decent tutorials in them that helped explain things quite simply

my missus is going mad at me buying more mags though, i already get a couple of fishing mags every month, the occasional mountain biking mag and motorbike mags..........and i never throw them away, keep reading them and referring back to them all the time, ive got loads in my wardrobe, a big pile down the side of the couch and my bag for work has 6 in :lol::lol::lol:

she is sitting next to me on the couch glaring at me as i type this :lol::lol::lol:

Best bet would probably to get Photography Monthly one month then Practical Photography the next and see which one you prefer. As has been said, they both tend to repeat themselves but it's on an anual cycle.
Amateur Photographer has a good ratio of kit:technique:photographer and is weekly. Lots of ads, yes but they're useful to see what's available on the second hand market and roughly what it's worth.
I tend to avoid the mags with Digital in the title - there's much more to photography than just digital. TBH, I'd avoid any that were called Pure Film or similar as well.

I've bought most of them, and go through phases of different ones as the magazines change, and I change.

At the moment the two I'm buying regularly are Digital SLR Photography , and Practical Photography. They've got the balance of features, hints, tips, reviews and pictures pretty good imho.

I'll buy any mag that catches my eye though. I think there are about 15 camera mags to choose from, so there should be at least one for every one. ;)

As has been said though, they tend to repeat themselves after 12 months. And all the information they have is available on t'internet, but they are enjoyable to read.

I get digital photographer. Very good quality magazine printed on quality paper with a good variety of articles, which I don't find rotate.

Plenty of mags can be found on the net as 'free' PDF downloads.

I'm not condoning their download though.

Of course not. ;) Only kidding.

I buy the magazines because they are not on a screen. I don't find it comfortable to read a lot of information on screens. I also read the magazines mostly on the bus and on the toilet, ;) and having a magazine is the most comfortable thing.

No doubt in years to come all media will be via the internet to some kind of electronic device, but while the mags are there, and I want to read the information, I'll buy the mags. :)

digital SLR photography has an offer on at the moment 5 copies for a fiver and comes with a free set of reflectors.....bargain

I have just subscribed to this for the offer you mentioned as it looks a good mag :)

no mention of the reflectors anywhere though :/

cheers
