Yes
My girlfriend is going to America and she needs a long distance lens. She says she wants Canon and we would like to save money where possible.

Thanks

This sentence contains two ideas incompatible
with me:
— I am not a Canon user
— buying a long lens WILL cost some dough!

I know, I'm not much help either!

What does she need it for (use), which camera, and what is the budget.

If she's got a crop camera body (7D, xxD, xxxD or xxxxD) then the Canon 55-250is is an excellent lens that's small, light, sharp and comparatively cheap.

The budget answer would be one of the 3rd party 70-300s. Step up a level in cost and the Canon versions are there. For longer reach, the Sigma or Tamron 50/150 - 5/600s are available, with the older (and IMO inferior) Sigma 170-500 being even cheaper. 2nd hand dealers will save a few quid (quite a few!)

"Long distance lens" isn't a very helpful description. I mean, stars are extremely distant, and most landscapes are fairly distant, but I wouldn't use the same lens for them as I would for (say) an animal which is likely to be much closer than either of them.

The 70-200mm L Mk2 is a class lens. I love it and it's not too big to take on holiday. Expense is relative and second hand is reasonable - holding its value to sell on. Saves hiring one. An extender will increase the distance. I was playing with a 600 at the Photography Show (with built-in extender) but, as they say, you get what you pay for...Good luck!

It seems we have exhausted our questions and are awaiting answers...

Seems the OP joined to ask this question and hasn't been back?
