On Wednesday afternoon we had a powercut for around an hour. When the power was reinstated my iMac wouldnt fire up again. There was no power at all. I've checked all the obvious things, socket, fuse etc but to no avail. I unfortunately didn't have the surge protector plugged in! Has anyone had similar problems, and was the outcome expensive? The iMac is 2 months out of warranty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Looks like a trip to the Apple Store in the Trafford Center is called for. I'd get onto the concierge site and book it in asap. They'll give you an estimate, but as it's only 2 months out of warranty they may be generous.

Booked in at the Genius Bar at 4pm, practising my best grovelling behaviour!

Did you manage to get it sorted out ?

How did you find their customer service ?

(I'm thinking of getting an iMac at some point in the future and everyone I've spoken to can't fault Apples customer care)

My hard disk came up with a SMART status of 'Failing' the other day. My iMac is two months out of warranty also. They said had it been 3-4 weeks out of warranty then they would include it but not 8 weeks.
I was quoted £175+vat for a new hard disk (1TB) fitted and reinstall of Lion and iLife, and a timescale of up to 5 days.
As it happens I took it in Friday morning and it was back on my desk again 4pm the same day. They were very helpful at the genius bar too with great info on syncing external drives etc that I was interested in learning about. So although it cost me a bit of money to get it sorted out it was at least sorted out extremely quickly!
I hope you have/had a similar level of service re speed of sorting it out?

Took the iMac into the Genius Bar at the Apple Trafford Centre store. The guy was helpful, firing up the computer and following a diagnostic check gave it the all clear. He couldn't explain the problem but suggested a fault at the power source. Took the iMac home and it still wouldnt fire up. An friend checked the electric supply and found no problems. A new appointment at the Genius Bar on Saturday afternoon. Saw the same guy, Mike, who remembered me from the day before. Machine wouldn't fire up this time, he couldn't explain why it had started the previous day and suggested it was a 'fluke'! He believes that a new power supply is needed. One's been ordered and the machine is still with them, hopefully getting it back for weekend (got some images to print for an exhibition!). £68 quoted for parts and labour. Can't really fault customer care so far, in fact they have been quite helpful.

Result! The iMac is Bac! Repaired by Apple under warranty, although it had expired. Customer service at the Trafford Centre was excellent, the parts arriving on Tuesday morning and machine ready for collection at 4pm. Cant say fairer than that!
Learnt my lesson, SURGE PROTECTION AT ALL TIMES!!!!
