So you go to a game with your DataCo in toe and shoot, edit, send etc

Once you have finished editing then going with the license you delete everything, dont hold copies of files

Is this the case? or do people keep a backup of only the images submitted?

Curious

is the dataCo in your name or are you getting in to cover games with an agency licence?

I keep all mine.. but then again they are on my licence.... steven yours are through agency so probably not a lot of point keeping as you cant do much wiht them...

i will be putting mine on my website for sale to media.. when i get chance... done two fa cup replays this week..one tonight.. just no time to get them onlien..

I understand that I can't do alot with them to be honest, was just wondering if something was to happen at a game, you send a couple of pics in but then an agency ask if you have any more similar or of the players for example (like Tobers with Terry / Ferdinand for example)

I dont mind leaving and hitting delete on them all as it saves me space, was just curious as to what others do

yeagh your right.. i do that.. if a news stopry happens and i can think back to a picture thats appropriate i send in.. has worked now and then.. no reason why you cant do exactly same.. you just tell the agency its been used and they charge... so yeagh keep..

i keep everything i shoot, send some to agency and keep everything myself in case, has worked on several occasions where Dave (agency) has rung me and asked if i have something i hadn't originally sent in

Generally I keep all the pictures from a game for 4-5 weeks after which I delete any that I hadn't originally "picked" and sent to the agency. Those that I had set as picked I'll backup and keep hold of in case the agency loses their copy.

The reason I hold onto the unpicked ones for a few weeks is precisely because of the issue raised above i.e. something newsworthy emerges from the game and I may unwittingly have a good image of it. When the Terry/Ferdinand thing kicked off I went through all the pics from that match for anything else significant.

Unfortunately, as hard as I tried I couldn't find any more than the two frames I had taken.

I do the same as Gary on more than one occasion the agency have asked for images of particular players, managers etc and I've had them published. Had I deleted them I'd have lost money

No harm at all in keeping them - just be very careful with how accessible they are. I have mine on a drive but also backed up/viewable on my website in password-protected galleries. General public cannot access these galleries, nor are they subject to SEO.

One of the agencies I shoot for uses this as an archive, and if a story comes up then we can search captions and pull down any relevant frames to send in.

I wouldn't keep them online. only stored on drives that are only accessed by me

Simply use a folder for the game, then in there a folder os wired images and one for the rest. can go back through them if something crops up after a game if asked

I can't rely on drives as being out a lot means I need them on the fly. Web works for me and pic eds.

At the risk of sounding like a dangerous renegade, i'm going to say the DataCo rules are there for the most part to protect the very lucrative image rights of leagues, clubs and players. Provided you're sticking to editorial guidelines and not being silly with where you send images (and definitely no private sales!), then you ought to be ok. Just be smart.
