Was wondering about data transfer for transferring pictures from a camera onto a computer’s SSD drive.
Currently have a laptop with USB 3 and a USB 3 card reader, also have a desktop with USB 2 and a USB 2 card reader. When doing transfer onto the desktop it is sooo slow. The desk top is due for replacement. While I have more or less settled on the CPU I am wondering about the motherboard.
I have seen one Gigabyte motherboard that has a Thunderbolt header on it. I understand that Thunderbolt is meant to be twice as fast as USB 3. But the price of Thunderbolt card readers is a bit steep. What is putting me off this is that it is an older style of board and that Thunderbolt 2 is due out which is claimed to be four times faster than normal Thunderbolt.
Also that USB 3.1 may be coming out later this year which is claiming to be twice as fast as USB 3.0, so don’t want to buy a new motherboard only to find that a couple of months later its replacement has the USB 3.1 option on it which I would have liked.
Or is in the grand scheme of thing all of the above a waste of time and that the CF cards and SD cards are the choke point in a USB 3 system so I would not see any additional benefit from either Thunderbolt/2 or USB 3.1?
Hope the above makes sense, as I want to try and future proof any new desktop to handle larger file sizes up to those of a D800.
