For information really for anyone (??) that MAY NOT have come across them.

You can buy a camera that goes in the windscreen of your car, facing forward to record any indiscretions happening out front, commonly known as a dashcam.

Last week, a friend was going through some lights (on green !!) when a woman turned right in front (coming towards him) and hit the side of his car.

My friend pulled forward so as not to block the junction and the woman f****d off sharpish. He didn't have a chance to get the number plate. BUT, his dashcam did. A copy of the recording is now in the hands of the local constabulary.

Well worth the money to protect yourself. (I have one in both the front and rear of my motor).

Got one, hate it, it resides in a dark corner of a cupboard somewhere !
I hated having the satnav on the dash, so now have a vent mount for it, much better, but obviously this isn't an option for the dashcam,
to hide the wires needs some major dismantling of trim if you fix it behind the rear view mirrir

My dash cam is behind the rear view mirror. It is impossible to see from the drivers position. The wires can just be pushed in the headlining, and underneath the dashboard trim to find the cigarette lighter. So far this has worked on my VW, Audi and Mercedes without dismantling anything.

I find it funny, not only has big brother camera's everywhere "for our safety"

That reminds me, it's been a while since I've taken photos of you :p

Seriously though, militant London cyclists dressed in black spitting at my vehicle whilst cycling through a red light is what drove me to get a dashcam for my vehicles.

I got the Roadhawk HD for myself, and a two part something else looking at the rear and front for my wife's car. The name totally slipped my mind.

Mine already paid for itself as it provided the evidence that was accepted in a parking dispute that the signage was not of satisfactory size to be able to read when driving in the car park. It was two months of arguing, until I remembered my onboard camera, created a private YouTube video upload, and I immediately received an apology and cancellation of the parking ticket.
 
Got a mini 0801 which sits just behind the rearview mirror out of the way, cable disappears into the roof lining. Bought it after a close shave at a junction one day where no witnesses were around and it would have been difficult to prove if contact had been made. I'd like to have contacted his chin though, damn near chit meself.

The problem is as more and more people drive like idiots with no regard for anyone except themselves,
It becomes almost compulsory to have one, and I don't suppose it'll be long before insurance companies start offering a discount for those drivers that have them on board,
thus saving insurance companies time and effort, from what actually they should be doing, as and when a collision takes place.
Yes I can see why people have them,
and yes I am still cynical, that'll never change though :D

They already provide discounts, but only on certain models as there is a lot of crap out there just like with cctv that barely records anything recognisable. And let's not forget the ones that record your own gps speed and direction as well.

Again helped a friend of mine with his £10K bumper repair on his Range Rover revere. A Citroen driver didn't stop and went straight into his wing in a multi story. The old man lied and said that he just pulled out without looking. His dashcam recorded everything including the motion sensors which proofed he we stationary.

The cheek of that lying man.

I can honestly say that it wouldn't come into my mind to lie about such or other matters. It is an alien reaction to me, especially so for situations where insurance will deal with it anyway.

They are of course frightened of losing their no claims bonus, or even worse, if they are just TPFT, they rely on the other parties insurance to pay for their mistake ;)

I've got a 64GB card installed in mine. It was sufficient for the frequent but short journeys I made. However I do apply a backup policy as well where once a week I copy the material off. I then parse out my journeys from the GPS data and create my automated mileage log as well :thumbs:
 
0801 here also. Luckily haven't needed the footage off it yet.

The problem are other road users who have zero situation awareness or sense of self preservation. Better safe than sorry when have to share the road with them.

Unfortunately Admiral didn't give me a discount :(
 
I started using a dashcam about 2 years ago, firstly an app on my phone which on it's first outing captured the car in front of me going into the back of a van that had pulled out in front of him doing an illegal u-turn. Gave the guy my details and his insurance company took a statement from me and requested the footage...... It looks like we were travelling much faster than we actually were, I discovered I had the focus mode on variable rather than fixed so that adds a "warp factor" to the footage:

Seeing as the dashcam app along with satnav drained my phone's battery so I decided to go for a dedicated dashcam and the Transcend DP200 seemed to fit the bill. Nothing as juicy as an actual collision yet but here's an example of the footage it captures:

For around £80 it's a good investment IMO
 
One thing I do wish is that people with dashcams keep the footage to themselves instead of posting openly on YouTube. I really don't understand this craze to point out other people's failings. By all means share with police or insurance when involved but otherwise. Why?

To be pointing out other people's mistakes is a nasty past time, and to me it doesn't do anything else but highlight ones own mistakes and hollow life.

It can also be educational though. Look at the Side swipe thread, it shows even though you may be doing nothing wrong, you can still leave yourself in a vulnerable position amongst other vehicles. So by posting up videos people can learn, take on board the stupidity of others and learn to read what others maybe about to do and save yourself from being involved in their accidents.

I was thinking about that thread indeed. Didn't witness much learning as many were stuck into their old people set ways that everything is too scary and don't get too close, others are driving too fast etc. Totally unwilling to see the danger they put themselves in.

Um, in some circumstances I guess it may be illegal. Sub judice and all that. At the very least you could probably get a conviction quashed.

Also, 10K for a bumper repair? Really???

Anyone got any recommendations for good ones?

I like dash cams, but it may end up looking like cyclists who have helmet cams (which are usually attached to knob heads )
 
I am certainly considering one of these for the Citroen C3.

Wow. I just looked those up and they are crazy money. Still, 10% of the cost for a bumper repair seems a little strong. Also, the depreciation looks alarming.

I'm sure he insurance company loaded it. Just imagine the equivalent car hire cost to provide transport in the mean time and you can imagine the cost going rapidly north without even touching the bumper yet ;)
 
How can anyone with eyes in their head not see a Range Rover Revere? It's one of the biggest Chelsea tractors out there - I've seen smaller lighthouses! :)

Lol have you seen some of the older drivers on the road ;) it really doesn't surprise me. Around me so many in their little Micras that drive in the middle of the country lane and won't move an inche to get into their own side. Or drive 40 in a national speed limit zone and continue to do 40 in 30 zone and continue to do 40 when they leave it. Yet hit the brakes every time a vehicle comes towards them.

Yes, doesn't surprise me at all. I've given permission to my children already in writing to shoot me if I ever become a driver like that.

The funny thing is that I see the look of fear in my father in laws face when I drive on the left side of the road. Trust me, I really don't want to scrape those 21 inch polished alloys, I really won't go too close to the kerb. Yet somehow he seems to think I am. Btw his is not a Micra, Astra drivers do the same :p
