The TP52 - 2026 Darkslinger's 52 for 26

Week #1 Lines and Angles

I managed to get off my duff do a walkabout downtown yesterday. The Skytrain and delays so seemed to take me forever to get there which cut my touring a little short but I'm happy with some of what I got.

One of the first images that I got on the train platform with the low sun streaming through:
Week 1 - Lines & Angles 2.JPG

In Chinatown, because it was still early, many of the storefronts have these accordion style security gates across them, this one in front of a tattoo parlour with the dragon face caught my eye:
Week 1 - Lines & Angles 3.JPG

But I was looking for something different to do with them and I found one on a dilapidated building that was partially open. I thought it might look cool shooting out at the street. I was lucky enough to capture this guy getting off the bus:

The bright yellow through the window caught my eye here:
Week 1 - Lines & Angles 5.JPG

There are a couple of brutalist buildings that I am drawn to, I thought that shooting this one at an angle with some of the blue sky might be interesting;

The bright yellow really catches the eye as does the blue sky
there's something about the contrast between the drab urban buildings and the splash of colour that appeals to me.

I'm with you Allan, I always like that pop of colour against dull and dark.

Yeah the yellow through the window pops! That’s the shot for sure!

A fine set to start off the year Bill. I like the light on the railway platform and the lines of the floor tiles. The unknown person who looks like he's in a hurry adds to the shot.

Love the one you used, the guy from the bus really makes it. Really like the yellow one to, the 'pop' of the colour along with the angled receding of the light works really nice. I imagine it was a tough choice!

Once again, a great set Bill. Any of them would have made a good choice. Your actual selection is different - looking out at someone looking in. I instinctively wonder what is going on. Excellent.

The chinatown shot really caught my eye, but the reflections take something away from it.
So I'm with quite a few of the others here with prefering the yellow one.

I do like that you've captured the chap looking at you in the street shot you chose though :)

Great set for the theme Bill. I like the yellow shot, but your chosen one is great, especially with the bloke giving you the eye!

Great start to the year Bill, like your chosen shot- could add framed with the fellas face in picture. Like the yellow with the angles of course :) ,

All work for me Bill, but then again they always do. Like the blue light in the distance on the first shot

Lovely set here.

I'm also drawn to the yellow pop of colour image, as well as the last one of the building and sky. Though I think I would have looked to make an even more extreme crop to get the edge of the building on the diagonal from top corner to bottom.

I'd have gone with your chosen shot, some real interest with the "scooter-ist"

Thanks Pete, one of the first shots I took on the day. I was lucky that one of the trains stopped and this guy was running to catch a connector.

Actually I was choosing between the shot that I chose and the guy running across the skytrain station...I liked the colour of the yellow one but didn't think that there was enough story to the shot.
I like the chosen image with the gent looking through the gate / fence / barrier. I also like the pop from the yellow in the other image you took.
Thanks Adam.

Thanks Paul, I walked that road a lot but I've never come across one of the security gates open like that.

Thanks Tim, to be honest I knew that I'd captured his head when I took that shot but it wasn't until I got home that I saw he was looking right at me (he was probably wondering what the hell I was doing...)
Great set for the theme Bill. I like the yellow shot, but your chosen one is great, especially with the bloke giving you the eye!
Thanks Simon!

Thanks Keith, I thought about adding it as my tech shot but thought that I'd find something better with one of the next themes.

Thanks Wayne, that's from the tinted glass enclosing the station.
Lovely set here.

Thanks Kell, yeah, I thought about doing that when I got it into post but didn't like the result. Wish I had thought of it at the time of shooting....

Thanks Alan.

Week 2 Rust and/or Decay + Tech

Whenever we get a theme that is a "subject" and "subject" I always think of the "and" as "and/or"...just sayin'...

So, with that in mind these shots from Barnett Marine Park are probably more decay rather than rust...

It was quite foggy out in the morning and the fog was just lifting when I arrived.

There is a small lighthouse at the park right beside some ruins from an old sawmill. This part juts out into inlet and the city has added railings. A lot of people fish and crab from this concrete and brick structure.
Week 2 - Rust and Decay 1.jpg

The center of the decaying structure has four entrances that open into a small, round area. I thought that the lighthouse looked cool looking from one entrance through to the other.
Week 2 - Rust and Decay 2.jpg

Looking back the other way there is another large remnant of the sawmill, I liked the trees jus peeking through the fog on the hills behind it
Week 2 - Rust and Decay 3.jpg

There are also a number of rotting posts and piers in the water that make great subjects. I liked the loon sitting on a log beside these ones.
Week 2 - Rust and Decay 4.jpg

There a number of streams that have outflows into the inlet, this one runs through crumbling brick and a rusty culvert
Week 2 - Rust and Decay 5.jpg

And this is the remnant of a pier that runs out into the water (I like the pop of red from the danger sign)

Well framed Bill, see you have the UK sky there. Had to look up loons, really like the remains of the pier

I like the one you've chosen Bill and the dark surrounding really emphasises the decay.

Interesting location and framing technique done! I’m glad you said it is a lighthouse, I thought it probably was but wasn’t sure! I’d have been tempted to light the tunnel or lift the shadows slightly to show a bit more texture- but I’m currently looking on a phone so I might be wrong!

There's no ambiguity to the framing there! I like the bleakness and the negative space from the arch.

That’s a great shot and you tick the framing off also. Nice one.
Thanks Adam!

LOL, loons are ubiquitous around here Keith.
Yeah we've been getting a lot of fog over the last week and half, makes for great images.
I really like your chosen image.
I may have cropped off some of the negative space at the top though, but that's a personal choice.
Yeah, I thought about that Tim and played with a more aggressive crop but ultimately settled on keeping the black space in...

A great set, and your chosen one: tick, tick and tick.
Thank you Paul!

Thanks Bob, I guess "lighthouse" is a little bit of liberty as that maybe implies the ability to enter the structure. This is more of mini-lighthouse, maybe 12-15 feet tall.
Your chosen shot has a daunting feel to it, I like it.
Thanks Allan!

Thank you Nick, I almost didn't see this shot.
I know you were going for the framing anyway, but I think it's a great shot.
Thanks Kell, I appreciate it!
Great set of pictures there, and the framing for your chosen shot is spot on!
Thank you Simon!
I do like the composition of the chosen shot
Thanks Alan!

Week 3 Windows and/or Doors

Much like last week, I'm taking the theme to be an "and/or" challenge...

I took a walk around my neighbourhood and Granville Island (you can read more about GI HERE) and took probably 200 shots, of which there about two dozen that I thought could have worked for the theme. Ultimately I decided to go with "things I could see through a window"...

I liked how the low sun was streaming through the windows of the these two Skytrain stations.
The yellow barrier really popped (to my eye):
Week 3 - Windows and Doors 1.jpg
I got lucky with person stepping off the escalator, I liked how the reflection in the window I was shooting through shows up in his jacket:
Week 3 - Windows and Doors 2.jpg

These five were through various windows around Granville Island:
Lots of industrial artists here:
Week 3 - Windows and Doors 3.jpg

And bakeries:
Week 3 - Windows and Doors 5.jpg

On the way home through the windows of the train, the light was kind of cool.

One of the stations:

Looking towards the Skytrain bridge that crosses the Fraser River:

Super varied set. My fave is 'One of the stations'

LOL, thanks Dave! All varied but with the underlying theme of "looking out"...

Cracking photo's I like them all!

Thanks Wayne, high praise!
I looked as this thread first Bill before I saw your your entry. I would not have guessed that was the one. My fault for not giving due time to the photo's. Your selection is very nice, how long did you wait for the orange truck, I bet it just popped up there right away, ha ha, Brilliant.

LOL, all luck. It was one of the last shots I took at Granville Island. I find a lot of times that it's either one of the very first shots I take or one of the very last ones that stands out for me.

When I looked at them all I could think about was Homer Simpson...aaaaahhhh...doughnuts...gaaahhh...

Is it better to be a lucky photographer or a good one. :ROFLMAO:
