I get it, some people do not like cyclists. Being a cyclist myself I have come across some complete idiots on two wheels, however there has been a disturbing increase in trail sabotage (nails in the ground, logs across tracks, rope/wire between trees etc) with the intent of at best damaging peoples bikes and at worst killing them and that is inexcusable.

Plus it's not only cyclists in harms way, some trails are shared access meaning walkers/runners, children and animals could also be seriously hurt.

Just a few of many recent examples are below, if you see any suspicious activity or know of anyone that actively undertakes in such sabotage please report them to the authorities before someone gets killed..

Barbed wire stretched across bike path left cyclist having to pull it from around his throat

There are some quite evil/demented folk out there Neil. Watch how you go.

There are a couple of places,on our regular trails, where I ride slowly up & check that there are no 'new obstacles' that have appeared. It's never occured to me to check on the ground for nails though!

The spikes on that double don't bear thinking about......food for thought, for the future.

Back in the mid nineties, one of our team members on a 10 mile TT, was injured when yobbos threw stones off a bridge above the dual carriageway. He finished the race, but had to go to hospital to have stitches put in the wound. A couple of months late I was training on the same road, and had stones thrown at me. I confronted them, but a couple of locals turned up and threatened me.
There are a lot of very stupid and ignorant people around.

Terrible that, stay safe.

as much as i can't abide cyclists ,this sort of stupidity is beyond the cringe .hope they get caught

All too many psycholists ride like they have more rights than other road users. Precious few seem to ride with due care and consideration for others.

What did we do? :)
around here there a arrogant bunch of arsewipes that take no consideration of a persons ability to hear them coming .or the ability to get out of there way quickly .the local council on the wirral decided to turn a narrow footpath into a cycle track and its now a racetrack for wannabe velodrome hopefulls .at 71 with high frequency hearing loss i simply cannot hear the tinkling of there bells or move quick enough to get out of the way .one day someone is going to get seriously hurt by one of these men in lycra .
normal families on bikes i have no problem with its the middle aged idjits i can't stand ..... the council put up a offset gate at one point and it got ripped off and thrown down the embankment as it slowed them down . the cycle path doesnt even meet the regulatory width rules but hey ho who gives a f*** .... .no i hate them with a passion but i wouldn't go as far as putting down these spikes .although if the lycra mob are like our local ones i can possibly understand it

Yeah, I must admit, some guys can be very inconsiderate. Where I live we have 'pelotons' who will make cars wait, before 'allowing' them to pass. The problem is that some car drivers will cut them up, or probably have done in the past. That causes a tit for tat reaction, & the whole thing escalates.

Mountain bike riders though....salt of the earth

Want the list?

I've been told I'm a c***, a f*****g idiot and a w****r in the last couple of months. All the time as a pedestrian on shared use footpaths or pavements.

I know that every walk of life has its share of nobs but London cyclist have more the most

No behaviour deserves potential maiming or worse.

I'm not arguing with that Neil. Simply pointing out it's hard at times to maintain a great deal of sympathy (which is a point I've not reached easily)

I've been abused by more motorists than anyone else, but I'm not going to start defending people throwing bricks off motorway bridges or lose sympathy for those effected.

Where have I defended this behaviour?

Simply because I find it hard to have alot of sympathy certainly doesn't mean I defend or support these actions

Unbloodybelievable I really hope whoever did this really gets there just reward ...

What about people / families / kiddies going for a walk - can you imagine what would happen if a little one jumped in the frozen puddle

Blimey, some of those sabotaging tracks pictures are extreme in the least , attempted murder.

Car drivers should be aware of the duty of care to cyclists, many are not even concerned about passing at a safe distance, I watch an old fella on the country lanes pass a couple of lone cyclists, almost hitting them with wing mirrors, I would have had to have testified he was intending harm imho had there been an accident.

Personally I give cyclists a wide berth, waiting for oncoming cars to pass then use the opposite side of the road to pass a cyclist. There are however many that seem to think they are indestructible especially in traffic jams on the wrong side of the road fully expecting the on coming cars to see them in any conditions, regardless of what attempts they have or have not made to be seen by others, no helmet on and no lights or high viz...either way I relent 100% because who wants a death on thier hands even if it wasn't my fault, I still don't want it on my mind....

yup, was a bridleway too so dogs and horses would also be seriously hurt. those nails are pretty damn long, I imagine they'd have a similar effect to a caltrop which was often a death sentence for a horse.

We have had similar round my way in Essex. Not quite as extreme as some of these examples, more just logs placed across trails, ropes and wires etc.
funnily enough, it's in similar areas that there have also been a lot of problems with dog poisoning. Some people just don't like anyone!

Complete madness, as has been said.

As a parent of a young child who (like all children) likes to splash in puddles with their wellies on, my heart just skipped a beat :(

Absolutely irresponsible of whoever did this, and I hope they're caught. That "device" hasn't happened to be laying around, it looks specifically constructed for the purpose!

not sure where these horrific scenes are but where i live the locals just try really hard to run cyclists over on the roads before they even get to the trails.
im a keen cyclist and i will not ride on the road unless it is just bare minimum to get to a cycle track or canal path.

Back last year we had a spate of fishing wire being strung across official bike trails that are used by commuters, kids and families every day. I've never been able to work out what goes through someones head when they set these traps up.:(
