Well here it goes.

Hoping to keep this going throughout the year.

Will really get to know my D60 before upgrading to a D90 in the autumn.

Am keeping my TZ5 in my workbag just in case I'm lucky enough to spot a shot for the theme.

Good luck everyone!!

Good luck Dan will look in when I get the chance

Here goes nothing.

I narrowed it down to about 5 ideas but the snow has kept me indoors, and my new SB600 (cheers Kerso) was begging to be tested.

C&C welcome

Lovely shot, very topical with darts on TV at the moment.

Thats what I thought, had to dust mine down from the shed.

Mine only gets used at summer bbq's when its warm enough.

Cheers

Many thanks for our comments.

I thought I was fairly competent with DoF till taking this shot.

Didn't get the shot I wanted until I turned to MF on the lens.

Learnt a lot already, only the first week!

Well, to tell the truth, it's not for me - maybe it's the "not normal" orientation? Focus point missed the dart? Not sure, but it's just, sort of not there. Sorry :(

Arthur

** edit - I have messed with it for a bit and now know what I found disconcerting... it's left-handed!

Different! - not something I'd put on the wall (well I would a dartboard obviously!) - but work's for the theme of curves. It's really interesting seeing what people come up with.

Focus point missed the dart?

To me, thats the bit that appears to be in focus on a very shallow DOF! The bit of the dart, just below the barrel. Guess it has a technical name - but I'll call it the "pointy bit!"

Cheers for your comments Lynton,

It wasn't meant to be one for the wall, just thought it wass a good subject to learn from.

I also thought the dart was in focus, its the main part of photo I was trying to focus on with a very small DoF.

Thanks again

Hi Dan,
Great to see that you're getting something positive out of the 52 already

It certainly fits the theme for and the colours have come out great - they certainly add some impact. The shallow DOF works well and the focus on the tip of the dart actually looks very good on my monitor.

The angle of the shot accentuates the curves nicely, but I do have one little criticism.
It may be because I'm a traditionalist at heart, but I'm not too keen on the orientation of the shot. It just doesn't feel right to have the dart board lying horizontally, I think I'd have preferred to see it vertical.

as sarah said, vertical mate would better. Have you tried rotating them photo, to see how it look's?

For me, this project is about learning new things. Seems like you set out to learn something new and you have nailed it - great use of DOF. You don't realise how difficult it is to obtain a perfect DOF until you try it yourself and you certainly have. Like you said, you didn't take the picture to put up on the wall, and I think given it's the first week, you should be very happy with yourself. Well done.

Thanks for all your input, it would seem I've concentrated so much on getting the DoF on the money and sacrificed the obvious.

This is exactly why I have signed up to the photo52.

Will have another go in the next couple of days and see if I can improve it.

Cheers

The DOF is near perfect, nice vibrant colours too.

Love the DOF on this, Great composition, personally id have liked to see the colour stand out a bit more as its a bit dark to me.

But fantastic start to the 52. Great effort, i look forward to seeing the other 51 ;)

I do like this, nice idea, has already mentioned I think I'd have preferred to see it vertical.
great start

Have had a quick play and taking into consideration some of the helpful comments tried to improve on my first image.

Instead of using i-TTL with my SB600, I altered the power manually until I got more light on the subject to show more colour (via ceiling bounce), also added more contrast in PP.

The biggy is I also had the dartboard vertical for the shot.

Any comments welcome.

Hi Dan, LH means the board is facing the left, so I threw the dart with my left hand, if you can understand that? I'd have it facing the other way, straight up, and with the dart coming in with a bit of an upward angle. Maybe I'm not getting my point across here, or I could just be waffling... ignore me!

I'm pretty happy with the image now, have also taken one from other side and think I prefer this one.

The more I show of the dart, to show any upward dart angle, the more wasted space there is at the side of the board which I thought looked wrong.

Cheers

Dan, these are both excellent, mate. Really love the colours in the second, but love the abstract nature of #1.

Prefer no#2 as it's got a great DOF and it was a great shot too, only two more to get in that bed

Much preferring the angle of the second shot.

Hi Dan,

You Image has proved what is constant in Photography.....This being thus...

"Everyone's perception of what makes the composition work is different"

By posting your themed Image you have managed to devide the feedback between fellow togs and illicit differing responses.

Congrats, I look forward to watching your progress throughout the year ahead.

I really like the second one, the curves are very good, and the colours and DOF are about right for me.

Oh god, what a great image this could have been.

Follow some compositional rules and you have a great shot.

Lines leading in from the edge, point of dart on third with the dart coming in diagonally from the left through the OOF number 5.

Yeah, really like the rotation and crop of my first Ed, did something similar myself but opted to retake it as it showed more curves.

Really enjoyed taking this one, certainly put my DoF skills to use and also christened my SB600.

Cheers

Week two has been an interesting theme to say the least, think we were let off lightly in week 1.

I read numerous poems and even nursery rhymes and had a couple of ideas. I originally planned to photograph the 'Duke Of York' pub nearby from the obvious nursery ryhme but it didnt allow for a good photo when I visitied.

I opted for a photo that brings back good memories. The photo shows the lectern in my local church that was used by my sister-in-law to read a poem out at our wedding last summer... it was actually the first time I'd been back into the church since that day.

The church had no lights on (and daren't go rooting for a switch) so used my SB600 flash on 'rear curtain' flash, with a 6seconds shutter speed, f2.2.

Dan,

Yeah that kind of works for me, especially as you have such a personal connection with the picture. tut tut.... I thought the whole idea of getting the church wedding was that you would faithfully go each Sunday and follow the Christian path  , (that's why we opted for the Registry Office :lol:)

Seems a lot struggled with this one so far........ me included.

I like the curves image, particularly after Ed's rotation of it, it rings a bit more true to life.

This weeks shot obviously served the intended purpose and got you off doing something new and the result is a nice shot. I can't decide between the colour and the B&W, like both, so keep both :D

My only criticism, I think you cropped the lectern thing on the right edge and it would have been nice to get the whole thing it. It doesn't massively detract from the shot but its the only thing I'd change I think.

Cheers for your feedback.

Think I prefer the B&W most but cant fully decide so put them both up.

Took a fair few shots and this was my best. I jsut shot it too tightly too the right as the only copping has been to the left and top. Oh Well.

Learnt a bit more about my camera, so its all been worthwhile.

Cheers

Just revisited......

Colour for me. ( I think)

nice effort, i prefer number one as the colours give the image more definition, plus they are very subdue which lends itself well imo
