Damage to my lens.

I leant my Sigma 70-300mm lens to a mate who has returned it with a few scuffs to the front of the glass. Apart from being very annoyed (it had a cokin filter on from 'birth' to protect it) I am now in the position of wanting to try and get it sorted.

His explanation is that there was condensation between the filter and the lens, so he removed the filter and cleaned the lens glass. I am sure he must have used his shirt!:bonk:

Is it possible to have the lens coating cleaned and refurbed or is it a lost cause. In terms of quality of pics it doesn't seem to affect them, but I want it sorted.

Regards,

Bob

He damaged it - so he should sort it (if you want a simple and honest response), if I borrowed a lens and anything happened to it while in my care I would consider to be my responsibility.

I find it ironic that he complained of condensation between the filter, and took it on himself to cause danage to the item himself. I think your perfectly just in asking him to pay for it to be fixed as now it has permanent marks on the front element.

(IMHO)

Hi Bob,

Have you tried using a lenspen on it? its amazing what they can get off - if its not actually damaged the lens coating.

If you were to send it to Sigma they will replace the necessary elements - but as they are the expensive components, the cost could be proportionately large.

In fairness he has offered to pay... I vented my spleen on him but he has been a mate for 30 years and I don't want to fall out over it. He feels pretty bad about it (and so he should!). I am more interested in finding the solution to it which the replies so far have helped me with.

Would your lens be covered on your house (or his?) insurance under accidental damage?

I think it would definately be possible to have it refurbed, but I'm sure it's a Sigma only job.

It may cost lots, it may not. Would be best giving them a ring or firing off an email, see what they say.

It may just be cheaper to buy a new lens to be honest, if you *really* want it sorted.
However, if it becomes too costly to repair, and a new lens is the cheaper option, I would personally live with it, if it isn't having an effect on your pictures.

It may however, cause problems with exaggerated lens flare in the future though. So thats something to watch out for.

One good thing about sending it back to Sigma, they will check it over and make sure it's focusing properly etc. before sending it back so you'll be sure of a good lens.

Try getting it professionally cleaned - sometimes minor damage to the coatings can be polished out, though experience with Sigma lenses has taught me that their coatings are very fragile indeed.
I know he's a mate, but I'd ask him to cough up for a new lens - he gets to keep the damaged one.

Took your advice and a brand new lens was delivered today with a slab of John Smiths.... very happy! Cheers.
