I came home to an email from a Sports Editor at the Daily Mirror in Northern Ireland asking for a picture I have taken recently for the Football Club I am the official photographer for.

It was the Club Captain getting an award for his 300th competitive appearance for the club as they are doing a feature on him for Tuesday's Football Pullout.

The following is what was sent.

Hi Darran

Just wondering if we (Daily Mirror) can use your pic of Andy Morrow getting presented with award for his 300th game with Bangor.
I'm doing a big interview with him for Tuesday's Match on Tuesday pullout and we would like to use picture. If you're OK with it, could you email me the original in high res.
Kind regards

*******

At first I thought fair play someone does look at my website  but then I thought it was wild cheeky.

I have emailed back saying they can certainly use the picture if they pay a fee as obviously it's a National (although regional edition) with a large readership.

I have just got an email back saying

Hi Darren,
Fair enough, no problems. How much is the cost and I'll run it past the office.
Cheers

So where do I start?

Do I go in low £25-£30 and be happy I am published.

Do I go higher and get laughed at and end up not being published and not being paid.

or is there a medium figure to go in at where I could end up doing more shots and being used on a regular basis when they need some work done that one of their guys can't get too.

Would go for £80-£100 for the whole page, so workout what fraction of the page it will be covering and charge accordingly

Cheers.

Have emailed back due to time issues. Have decided on the £30 mark and see what follows.

Opening doors...

I'd go for £100 as suggested. They might laugh at this a little.

I think you've sold yourself short. Should of gone for a £100 and if they said too much then asked for £50.

you've definitely undersold yourself. But that's no problem you'll know for the future. Check the NUJ freelance photographer's page. They have a list of averages for pictures sold to magazines/newspapers in proportion to size.

But...You got published!! It's a great start

Been published in a few locals before, including one paper using a two page spread on the new manager. Though they did this without my knowledge or permission. :nono:

Did you send them an invoice for unauthorised use? If not (and if you have a copy of the paper in question) I'd get one sent in sharpish.

How did you arrive at this figure, if you don't mind me asking? Genuine question as I work for a publisher and personally that's incredibly low.

daily mirror? as in same as the uk daily mirror a national paper? if national then they should be telling you the price and would be as indicated.. 80-100 or more

if an aptly named local paper.. regional even then yes more like 30
