Can anyone shed some more light between these two bodies.. Obviously the main differences, bigger sensor two sd slots etc but looking for more day to day views how they are as a body to use and not in paper. Maybe someone who has had both bodies or still has bith? I'm upgrading from a D3000

Thanks

The sensor size are the same ( all dx sensor ). D7000 is the better choice. It got a more advanced sensor e.g better high iso performance.

If there's not a great deal difference in price, then the D7000 is the best one to opt for. It will have slightly better ISO performance at higher ISO, and very slightly better image quality overall, it's also got better HD video, if that matters. I don't ever think it should with dslrs tbh.

As for controls, the bodies are pretty much the same, same controls on body, same menu system ... if it's just for stills, in decent lighting or using flash mostly, then there's no real difference.

I had a D90 as my first DSLR having moved from film. When I bought it there was a significant price premium to the D7000 which I couldn't justify. The D90 was a very good camera in its day, but things have moved on paricularly with sensors. As well as the D90's lower resolution, I found it limited in that the IQ dropped from ISO800 - the D7000 should be able to go way beyond this. Another limitation of the D90, and to me very important difference, was the colour rendition. Quite a subtle point but I found skin tones and intense reds/greens didn't come out as I'd like.

There's not a huge difference in handling between the D90 and the D7000, but the D7000 does have the U1 and U2 settings which I find very useful.

I've recenly upgrade to the D600 - but I suspect that if I'd bought the D7000, I'd still be using it. If you can afford it, go for the D7000. It looks to be a bargain at the moment.

I currently own both, the D90 is still a decent body. In hindsight the jump from D90 to D7000 wasn't as great a leap as I thought it'd be, wish I'd held out for the price to drop because it is now very much a bargain.

It depends on your budget, but for my I'm very much trying to forget about upgrading bodies for a while, as I'm finding lenses are making much more of a difference and letting me learn more. Also holds its value better over the years... The differences in modern DSLR generations are not leaps and bounds, they're incremental improvements, and most reviews mentioning the D90 and D7000 said it wasn't a black and while call to take the newer model, which I'd say reflects my own experience.

FWIW I went from D40 to D90 and the difference felt massive at the time, so I'd say either body will feel substantially nicer, it's just whether or not you want to save some cash towards glass :)

I had them both, personally would choose D7000 over D90 as it feels better in the hand. D90 very plastic... D7000 still plastic but feels better, don't know how to explain :) D7000 weather sealed body. faster FPS. Dual SD's. U1 and U2 settings. better ISO, IQ, 39 AF points (vs. 11 AF point on D90). Well everything really better. BUT D90 still lovely camera. If price difference small get D7000, if not get D90. both of them will be upgrade from D3000.

Most of the reasons have already been given but I'd agree with the consensus, go with the D7000.

A modern sensor offering ; Better ISP performance, improved DR.
Dual SD Slots

Hardly any difference in my opinion, having owned both.
D90 is a better size (smaller), D7000 has a few more nice things, but not essential things.
IQ the same, essentially.
Both handle well.

Not sure I've appreciated the "upgrade"!:)

Bottom line - you can't go wrong with either!!

I'm with this :-) I'm not getting rid of either soon, they're both enough for me to be getting on with!

I've had both as well.

There's a few upgrades but nothing huge.

Biggest thing for me is the AF upgrade.

I borrowed a D90 to assist with my kickboxing shots last Saturday and oh my... not good enough at all. The D7000 does a swell job but the keeper rate on the D90 was terrible.
