Hi, okay here is the problem I hate having to wait I can buy a D90 now, I currently have a D70 but now feel I really could benefit from a good camera the D70 owes me nothing but I am kind of thinking that if I get the D90 now it would be my backup camera next year if I do get it and my kids get to play with the D70 what do you all think should i buy now or wait untill maybe Feb before I can afford the D700.

many thanks

Michael.

Hmmm....that means you would be buying an APS-C camera and then an FF one, so you'll need two sets of glass......

but all my glass will work on the D700 I thought, I just hate waiting and i kinda know that by feb time it will be a couple hundred pound cheaper.

If your Nikon lenses are DX then will crop on the D700..
Any lens that does not have 'DX' in its specification should be fine on the full-frame D700 .
Sigma 10-20 has a 'DC' designation, which is Sigma's equivalent of Nikon's 'DX' designation - therefore, it should work on a D700, but as above.

However why not think about the D300 save some £700 over the D700, unless of course you have a good reason for going F/Frame.

Here is what nikon says about the Dx lens on the D700.

DX Cropping mode:
The Nikon D700 lets you select from either FX format (36x24) or DX format (24x16). At the default setting of [Auto DX Crop] the camera will automatically select DX format when a DX Nikkor Lens is attached.

What this means is you can use your Nikon DX lenses, but the camera sensor will crop the image much like a D80 and any other DX camera does now. When using a DX lens you will not get use of the full sensor as you would with FX lenses.

Even though your current lens lineup will work with the D700, I think you'll find yourself buying more glass shortly after getting the fx camera. That 105 is your longest lens now, and will be roughly the equivalent of your 50 mm on the D70. I don't know what kind of photography you do, but I couldn't be happy with nothing longer than 105, even on a dx camera.

Why not just buy the D700 now. It my/may not be cheaper in February but by then you'd have owned it for 5 months and had fun with it in the meantime.

Save up and get what you ultimately want unless you can afford (and won't regret) buying the stuff in between.

The 10 - 20 sigma will work but only with the sensor in DX crop mode (well it will work in both but it vignettes the corners off on the full frame setting same as the D3) Wayne

okay I know it was the video thing that makes me think now D70 last week i was out on a shoot with edinburgh Gary and i missed so many oppertunites with out the full frame you can only go back as far as the wall allows! i currently have £1400 in the kitty so i will wait well try and wait till next month and get it thanks for the advise and comments and i will need to get a new replacement for the 105 what would you guys recomend i save for i like the lens for the croped candid face shots and the macro insects
