D90 and Raw

HELP! I decided to try and shoot raw with my Nikon D90 a while ago. I set it up to shoot both raw and jpeg, however, I do have some photos only done in raw.

The problem is I can't open the raw files. I am using Nikon's Capture NX and have just downloaded the latest version. When I try to open an image (they have the extension .NEF) I simply get the error message that it can not load it.

Anybody got any ideas?

Sadly I do not have photoshop on my computer. I do have corel photopaint, but only an old version at the mo - am waiting an upgrade to come in the post! But not sure if that will open it either.
 
I assume by Capture NX you mean Capture NX2?

If so then you should definitely be able to open NEF files.
The latest version of NX2 is 2.2.5

aha! no, I was still on NX - haven't even used that yet so never thought about a program update!

I shall download the trial - cheers for that!
 
ViewNX2 from Nikon opens the D90's files and is a free download.

Thanks all. Have downloaded trial to my laptop and will have a play whilst on holiday! Am leaving at 4 in the morning :)
