I have a D810 which is great but was wondering about a D500 as most of my photography is active dogs and wildlife. I can't afford two cameras unfortunately The quality is my main issue as I know the D500 is a DX camera.
d500 image quality is good enough for most people but i do seem to remember a member on here doing wildlife with a d500 and they switched to a d750 if i remember because they wanted better iso performance.
D500 AF is superb so for active dogs and wildlife it would be a good choice.
The D810 has a higher resolution but is lacking the speed/accuracy of the D500's AF; unless you are needing to crop extensively the D500 won't let you down.
D500 all day long.
I shoot dogs professionally and until I recently bought a Z9 the D500 was go-to dog action camera. I've just sold my D810 and still have my D850.
The AF is a country mile better than the D810 for action and you get the benefit of the crop for reach on your lenses.
Even with the D850 I would always choose the D500 if I need to shoot action.
It really is a fantastic camera.
If AF performance is your main priority then it’s the D500 all the way. The D850 was far quicker than the D810 but still slower than the D500. I found my D810 sluggish being honest.
