Although the original enel15 doesn’t work in my Z7 I discovered.. (it’s from my V1)All of the EN-EL15 variants are interchangeable

Interesting, perhaps needs a slightly higher current the first gen cannot provide
Or Nikon want to make life difficult for aftermarket suppliers until they work out the new coding.

More likely to be that the newer camera needs the (?) upgraded battery for current or battery management reasons. I have a few Fuji X-T and X-H bodies, some of which flash the message telling me that they'll work better with the S version of the batteries.
