i have a spec of dust presumably on the sensor, may be on the lens but i have cleaned that and its still there..
havnt quite plucked up the courage to do a sensor clean myself, but when i tried to lock mirror up just so i knew what to do when i decided to do it, the menu system told i couldnt do that because of the current settings (sorry cant remember exact message but it was something along those lines)
now as far as i know i dont have any 'unusual' settings configured, cant find the manual of course, so would one of you experienced types mind advising what may be wrong?

set to bulb take of lens fire shutter and keep button down then have a quick look then if something is on your sensor you will see it i will try and work out what you need to do by the way what mode are you in :wave:
 
Have a look on the Nikon site for the manual - IIRC, it's under customer service and takes a bit of digging. Worth downloading so you can see it when you need it.
 
Andy, can you post a pic where the "dust" shows up and can you let us know what settings you're shooting with (eg Auto, manual, programme, or whatever) and I'll (or someone else) figure out why you can't do the mirror lockup.

It may just be,as gribbsy says, because you don't have a fully-charged battery. Mirror lockup won't work without one, it's a safety feature.
