I want to have a go with on and off camera flash, I've seen that you can pick up SB-24/28's second hand relatively cheaply so thought it might be better to get a couple of these rather than one new SB-600. Are these older units compatible with my D80 and what would I need to have these trigger off camera?

thanks in advance...

I have the D80 and was of the same opinion as you in terms of buying cheaper SB-24/28.

I must admit I bought a new SB800 last year then read more @http://www.strobist.com[/URL]

Picked up a used SB-24 and SB-26 on eBay for around £60.00 each this year,I also got a set of cheap eBay triggers to fire off camera, these are cheap and I guess OK if you don't mind the odd misfire?

Spend some time learning off camera flash at Stobist it's worth an hour and you'll learn a lot!

Hope this helps a little?

I don't think any of the SBs will work on camera using ttl mode. You could probably use them on camera in manual or auto (if they have a thyristor) but don't quote me on it. Sbs will be suitable for off camera stuff, if you've got the money get PWs or Skyports and if you haven't get the cheapoones off ebay.

thanks, I'll think the first thing I'll d is get a couple of SB-600's (one for me and one for the wife), experiment with those and then possibly add a remote trigger and some older flash units after that...

None of the older SBs (24,25,26 etc) will work fully on a D80, they will certainly work in manual mode, but you'd need to doublecheck the voltage before sticking it on the hotshoe just in case you fry the camera.

SB-600s are a safer first time buy

nikon dslrs will take a seriously hefty sync voltage to fry them (200V+) so I wouldn't worry about that too much. It's other brands that have sensitive sync circuitry.
as for using the flash. I have a bunch of SB-28s that i regularly use as strobes. they also work fine on the camera in auto thyristor mode when using aperture priority or manual.

Get some cheap ebay radio triggers and you'll be fine. I've got a Sunpak 383, SB24, Sb28 and an SB800 all working together.
