Yes
I have a D7200 and I am interested in getting a 70-300mm lens with vibration reduction (VR) for a bit of casual wildlife photography but I am struggling to understand which lenses may be compatible.

I'm interested in the:

AF-P DX NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED VR
My understanding that because the D7200 does not have way of controlling the VR on the lens and so the VR is on all the time. Is this the case?

AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR
This gets round the lack of control from the D7200 by having a VR switch on the body of the lens. Is this the case when it is mounted on a D7200?

All advise gratefully received, pP

Thanks,

@Awfers I have seen this compatibility chart which says the D7200 has Limited Compatibility* and I believe the * is suposed to be linked to a comment about requiring a firmware update, undoubtedly "may require an update".

@gramps The link was usefull but fails to definatively say if the the VR is controllable with the f/4.5-5.6E lens.

I understand that the issue is the older cameras do not have the menu option to turn the VR on/off. This is obvously an issue with the f/4.5-6.3G lens as that is the only way of controlling the VR. The article did confirm that the VR is on all the time. However I feel if there is a VR switch on the lens (as there is with the f/4.5-5.6E) then the VR should be controlled by that switch. That would make it ideal for me but I'd like to confirm that as the price difference is £250.

Thanks any way, pP

I have found a Nikon web page which describes the compatibility: https://www.nikonimgsupport.com/eu/BV_article?articleNo=000035705&configured=1&lang=en_GB

This seem to pretty definitelly say that the VR will be on all the time, despite the VR switch on the f/4.5-5.6E lens. If that is the case I'll save some money and get the f/4.5-6.3G lens.

I bought the f/4.5-6.3G lens and have been very pleased with it.

It was the first time I have used a camera with an optical VR and so was surprised how obvious it was active. However I can confirm that if you switch the VR off on the lens it is also pretty obvious that the VR is turned off. i.e. it is NOT on all the time. I am now even happier with the lens. pP

Are you using the lens with a D7200? I thought you couldn't turn the VR off when using the AF-P 70-300 DX VR with that body.

Or did you mean the 4.5-5.6 FX model?
