Hello everyone, I'm looking for some thoughts on which glass people think would be best paired with the Nikon d7100.

Basically I'm back int he market for another camera and I'm starting from scratch again. I did own a d90 with a couple of DX lenses and two primes but due to circumstances I had to sell up two years ago. Anyway, things have changed and I'm ready to get myself back setup. I had narrowed it down to either the d7100 or the d610 but In the end I figured to get back in the swing of things I would go the DX route for the time being. For this reason I'm not wanting to commit myself completely to DX glass, what with one eye on going full frame in the future. So with that in mind which lenses do you think would be my best bet. I have a budget of £1500 for the glass.

I'll be mainly shooting street photography and just general family shots. I also plan to do a bit of landscape photography as I have a trip planned to Everest base camp next year.

24-70 f/2.8, 70-200 f/2.8, 50mm f/1.8 - pretty much the same as Gary's suggested. 2nd hand 3rd party lenses should come in well under budget and you might even find Nikkors. IIRC the D7100 has an AF motor in the body so older screw driven lenses will AF fine on it. That might even bring a 50mm f/1.4 into the equation if you want/need the extra 1/2 stop or so. If you want a slightly wider option than the 24mm short end, you could do a lot worse than one of the old kit lenses, the 18-70 that came with D70s and the like. Punches well above its weight. If at all possible, try the actual lenses (as in the one that will be yours rather than just any one) before you buy, there are reports of dodgy ones, especially older Sigmas (although I've seen reports of poor samples of other brands).

For the standard zoom, id consider a used 17-50 dx lens instead of a 24-70 full frame, and sell it if you move to full frame. It will be a much more useful focal length.

Id also consider a nikon 10-24 dx lens. Again used as they keep their value really well if you do decide to move to full frame. Best get the lenses that suit the camera you have rather than getting lenses that dont have that useful focal lengths.

ps you may actually like the range a 24-70 gives you on dx, but i found it long on the wide end on dx.

I'd agree with this 100%, especially the bit I've highlighted.

Plus, the latest Nikon DX bodies with 24 MP are very demanding in terms of resolution - even more so than the D800. If you want to take advantage of all those pixels, don't skimp on the quality of the glass.

Thanks for the input everyone, some interesting suggestions and food for thought. The 70-200mm is high on my list but I'm thinking of adding the 35mm f1.8g rather then the 50mm. I had both 35mm and 50mm primes with my d90 and found the 35 much more useful as a general walk about lens. This pairing would take me over budget but It would do me until I could splash a bit more on the 50mm and something at the wide end. I just need to decide if the 70-200mm is the wisest choice straight off the bat, or if I'd be better served spreading the money over a couple more lenses instead.
 
A very good quality tele that you may not have come across is the 50-150 sigma. I had one and found it to be very sharp, and significantly smaller and lighter than the 70-200's. If you go for the non-os version, you may find one for around 300-400 used.

Another alternative is the tokina 50-135, though i have not used that on but it also gets good reviews.
 
Hi. Welcome to the forum! I have the 7100 and use a 17-55, 28-300, 50 and 35mm f 1.8, also have a macro 40mm. Great camera! Very good pics with all lenses but not used the macro yet. A huge jump from the d90!!
