Before I start, I know that ultimately, lenses are pretty important in way of your final image, but heres the scenario.....

I previously owned a d7000, had to sell it through unforeseen circumstances.

when it came time to get another camera, I opted for the d5100, all I have at the moment is the 18-105 lens, the options I am looking at is keep the 5100 and get the sigma 10-20 and the nikon 35mm 1.8. Or change the body to a d7000 and a 35mm 1.8.

I miss a few things from the d7000 such as 100% viewfinder, dual scroll wheels, 39 focus points, really good 3d tracking, extra buttons for everything and the top lcd, I can work around all of these on the d5100, but should I have to?

I am just interested in hearing people opinions on this, as I know the sensor is the same, as such, so is low light etc... but interested to hear your views anyway.

Thanks in advance

I'd say it comes down to what you're shooting.

I may be wrong but if you're looking at the wider lenses you suggest then I'd say there's a good chance you won't miss the dual wheels, improved AF and top LCD too much as (sweeping generalisation coming) you may well be shooting more static subjects. Yep, they're nice to have, but are they necessary for you?

One thing I can be sure of though is that if you get a d7000 you wont be able to shoot at 10mm with your proposed lenses...

the point of thee 10-20 if I kept the d5100, was more for a different walk about lens, to add a little drama etc... its just the things I mention are what I seem to miss most about having the d7000, I don't know if its down to me, if I never had it I wouldn't miss it, but as I have had it before, I seem to miss those things, I detest changing all the settings from the read lcd.

Saying that, I have no issues at all with the image quality from the d5100, just when I rented a telephoto and went to the british superbikes a few months ago, the d7000 (when I had it) was excaptional there, the d5100, not soo good with less focus points, maybe, thats possibly my crap technique lol :D

I went from 5100 to 7000 and the extra control is great , sure , you can get round it but - thats it BUT. The 7000 is a much better cam. I do miss the flexible rear screen.

Thats what I was thinking, decisions.... by the way, why cant you shoot at 10mm (effectively 15mm) on the d7000?

I'm curious as well, as both the D5100 and D7000 are DX format, so I don't see what would stop you from shooting at 10mm.

You really have to weigh up how much you miss those things compaired to shooting ultrawide I spose. If you really want the latter I'd say it would be easier to "get around" the D5100's weaknesses than it would the lack of ultrawide coverage, next to impossible if your shooting moving subjects.

One thing to consider I spose is the new D5200 that seems to have the D7000's AF system, at the moment its priced just below the D7000 but I'm guessing that a few months down the line it may drop a good deal as the D3200 has.

I dont need to go wide, its more for the effect wide angles give on close subjects more than shooting wide if that makes sense,

anyway d5100 on ebay, if it sell for the asking price a d7000 will be on its way, if it doesnt, then decision made, :D
