OK, so I'm in the custom setting menu in e3 and have set it to 'Commander Mode', built in flash set to '--', Group A set to 'M' 1/1. All set to Channel 3.

This WILL fire the SB-600 but the flash on the body of the camera still fires. Is this suppose to happen? :bonk:

I was under the impression that the on camera flash wouldn't fire with these settings? Am I doing something wrong? Or is emitting a flash from the body the way the camera talks to the flash?

Thanks!

Yes, the internal flash will always fire as this is how it communicates with the off camera flash. If the internal flash is set to no output then it should have a minimal effect on the photo, however it is still possible to see specular highlights from the internal flash in highly reflective objects.

To combat this effect you need one of these. However this is really designed for the macro lighting system and will almost certainly limit the range. A far more costly solution would be an SU800 controller unit.

Cool. Thanks for the reply. I kind of thought that may be the case but it's good to have it confirmed.
