Yes
Having had my D3000 for nearly 18 months I believe that I'm at that stage where I would benefit from an upgrade in my equipment.

I've been looking at the full-frame, but slightly older, D700 against the crop sensored, newer, D300s.

My main interests are sports (football, swimming, etc.) but I also like to have a dabble with a bit of landscape photography as well as partaking in my 365 project.

I'm not sure which one I should go for. Can anyone help me out?

Thanks in advance.

In general the sports are at a distance?
So that would be the d300s (crop sensor) and a zoom of 300+.
Also does landscapes well. I have the D300 (slightly older model) and its wonderful!

That said, the D700 can do low light and is full frame. Might provide better pics.

Personally if you can get the d700 do that and keep the 3000 as aback up for zoom stuff. I have read on here that you need good glass to keep up with the d700 though so you might want to get the prices of a decent lens for landscape (20mm?) to add to your costs :D

Is there a chance you can borrow one or the other camera to try out?

Yeah I was always going to keep my D3000 as a back-up/extra camera as some situations are better to have a wide angle and telephoto lens at the same time.

I suppose I can have a look at the camera shops and see if they will loan one out.

You got any examples of the quality of shots with the D300?

What glass do you have at the moment? It's pointless spending the guts of two grand on a camera body and sticking £100 lenses on it........

Remember D700 is full frame so DX glass (presuming that's what you're suing on the D3000) isn't much use unless you're happy to have it shooting at 5mp rather than 12mp. So you may need to budget in new lenses as well if you go D700 - not a cheap exercise, believe me!

What about the D7000? Cropped sensor but amazing image quality.

Yeah that's what I have at the moment. I didn't realise that that would happen.

What would you think that the best step up would be? D7000?

I have to say, i started with the D300s and loved it. I was using 14-24, 24-70, 70-200 all f2.8 with it and then when I went to the D3s, wow! Depth of field between full frame and crop really is better on full frame! If I was to start out over again, I'd start with a D700, and a 50mm prime, and build up decent glass as and when I could, and keep your current set up for motorsports etc.

From an economics perspective surely the thing to do is buy a second hand D300 and start upgrading your glass to FX? You can probably own the D300 for a year or 18 months and not lose more than £200 on it. Then when you have upgraded your glass you can buy a second hand D700 which will probably have been replaced so should be quite a bit cheaper than they are now.

If you want to do motorsports and landscapes with a D700 I can't see you getting away with

It's pretty easy to advise you, but without knowing your budget we are fumbling around in the dark. I know Photographers who shoot. Motorsport with full frame, however the suitable lenses are expensive !

Or of course the best of both worlds, and buy a d700 and a d300s, what a loverly combination that would be to own, right where are them lottery tickets :o)
