Not sure which way to go, I shoot a few weddings a year and mainly shoot landscapes for greeting cards. I'm I going to see a big improvement going to the D700 or should I stick with the D300. It would mean some new 24-70ish glass as only have 17-55 and 70-200 and a 50 prime.
A bit of help would be good:thinking:

D700 is a big step up in image quality from D300, much much better at higher ISOs and noticeably less noise at lower ISOs too - on the D300 you have noise in blue skies at ISO200, the D700 files are very clean and can be pushed much further in PP as well which is very handy when PP'ing a wedding :)

Plus it's so much easier looking through a FX viewfinder than a DX one, the difference is quite something.

The only thing the d300 beats the d700 for is the crop factor that's it.
The d700 is is in a different class.

Plus one.... But why not go D3.... Lol

I went from D300 to D700. It's a great move but it costs! You'll be fairly covered on lenses, maybe just change the 17-55 for a 24-70, I had to change the lot more or less, ouch!

It is a great move, the only downsides being lack of crop factor (only a disadvantage at the long and in terms of lens cost), the slightly naff card access door (the D300's is much better) and the 95% view finder as oppose to the the D300's 100%. That said, the viewfinder is generally better by virtue of being much bigger and brighter which is handier than 5% extra coverage.

I can't say that I notice a huge difference in good light between the two but in low light the D700 is just leagues ahead. ISO 6400 is perfectly useable. Here's an example at ISO 25,600. It's noisy for sure but impressive.

With what you are shooting it's got to be D700

I have both, the D700 is superior in every aspect, so much so that even for my wildlife stuff I still prefer to use the D700 rather than the D300 with it's "crop advantage", much cleaner and detailed image, and the ability to use ISO6400.

didn't see the weddings bit. I have a d300 as a backup backup camera. I wouldn't want to use it in a dark church that's for sure!

D700!!

I recently made the move from D300 to D700 and it was definitely the right decision.

To be honest I wasn't expecting such a jump in image quality, especially given that they are the same resolution, but the D700 produces images that are in different league.

Plus you'll feel instantly at home with the controls and layout of everything.

Go for it! You won't regret it.

I keep thinking about making this jump too and it keep getting more and more tempting though I don't think my bank balance will like it! :bonk:

Ah go on, go on, go on, go on, go on, GO ON!

Seriously, I was in the same boat, but it's truly worth it.

Hmmmmmmm a D300 and two DX spec lens possibly in classifieds soon might see what the bank balance looks like after my holiday this year and car insurance is paid for!

Thanks for all the helpful comments, just have to make my mind up before the end of the tax year, that gives me 2 days

I hope you gents are correct as I have just ordered the last one from Grays of Westminster, it will be here on Sat or Tues. That is the last bit of spending for the year, until I need to upgrade the back up body. Does anybody fancy and D200 or D300 (only joking) Theres no way I would get a 2nd one past the treasury dept.
