Yes
firstly, apologies if this is in the wrong section but i couldnt decide where to put it.

Ok
I have an issue that is goign to be difficult for me to explain properly.

the reason its difficult to explain, is because initially it sounds like an unknowledable togs problem, making a simple mistake, but I can only assure you it isnt.

the probelm is, I have a Nikon D70, and bassically, outisde, in sun it is overexposing and blowing out detail quite heavily.

I know all about exposure and I can take the same photo with me fuji, or even my mega old bridge camera, without the same issues.

I have gone through all the exposure compensation settings that i can think of on the camera, and found nother wrong.

the big problem, i can take a test pic, use compensation to get it to, well compensate, and then it will randomly revert back to how it shoudl be and the compesated shot will be underexposed, change settings again, try anotehr pic, and it will randomly over expose again. making most of the shots i take with it wrongly exposed / blownout on the highlights.

It is definatly worth mentioning, I have had this camera about 3 years, and it has only recently (first time i noticed it was my sons Prom night a year ago) become a REAL issue, it a seems to have gradually gotten worse since then.

before i give up and throw the d70 and just use the fuji, is anybody aware of this issue, or can anybody think of any other settings i may have over looked.

just for the record, I have tried the auto modes as well just to make sure it wasnt me being stupid, and the results were the same.

any help woudl be aprreciated, even if it is to say, ahhh that old chestnut, your d70s light meter is caput (at least that would save my sanity)

Tried a firmware update or a 'reset' of some description?

I would be inclined to say either the lens aperture is sticking (unlikely if used with more than one lens) or the shutter mechanism is dying. Overexposure at least, with high shutter speeds, are signs that a shutter mechanism is failing as they begin to 'slow down'.

I would echo what trencheel said. Have you tried a different lens to make sure that it is not due a sticking aperture. I had this on an old lens (pre digital), but was able to check the problem because I was able to stop the lens down manually, which is when I discovered the lens wasn't actually stopping down.

Just worth checking you have not switched on bracketing or changed the metering mode to spot metering

yeah I have tried multiple lenses, and the same lenses on my fuji. also checked the bracketing is off.

I did a google search last night, and soem 1 else had same problem, after numerous posts of "learn how to expose" one person suggested checking the cameras contrast setting - so i will have a look throgh menus for that today (can honestly say I have never noticed a contrast setting, but you never know)

if that fails i will try take some more pics and post the results

how do i post with the exif intact again ( I have done it before but completely forgot how)

thanks for your help on this guys

If you post a link to a Flickr account or similar those of us with the correct permissions (which is everyone if you tag each image with 'everyone can see this photo') can see all the exif info including captions and camera data.
You also have to enable exif data to be viewable - but I think that's the default setting on Flickr anyway.
