D610 help

im sure this is an obvious one, but i have looked all over the place for an answer and cannot find it
On my d610, when i half hold down the shutter button it focuses, on my old camera i was able to focus and compose, but if i try it on the d610 it refocuses where ever the square is on.
is it possibly to turn this off?
its very annoying for me

you could try back button focusing - that way the focus function is completely separate to the shutter release

Edited to say - do you have it on continuous focus mode?

Do you have it set to AF-C (or AF-A) rather than AF-S? If you do it will continuously refocus whilst you're holding the shutter.
