Ok the thing is i want more pixels  so i'm thinking about getting a D60 but when i looked on Jessops site the D80 is not much more, am i right in thinking that my existing lenses will not work on the D80?, so do you think that the D60 is a better bet even though its not much different to my D40, or is the D80 a much better camera and it would be worth selling all my stuff to finance some new lenses ?

Nikon are due to announce very shortly the replacement for the D80 either called D80x or D90. You might want to hang on to see what the spec of the new camera is.

Your d40 lenses will work on the d80 fine I upgraded from the d40 to the d80 and im more than happy with it

What lenses have you got then?

Your lenses will work perfectly on a D80, no need to sell them.

hi all thanks for the quick response
lenses I have are the 18-55 kit lens
55-200 DX swm ed af-s
70-300 swn vr ed if vr
jessops x2 converter
AF 50mm d

So the D80 or its replacement ?

I think virtually every lens made by Nikon shouldwork on D80 (all new ones for sure), its the D40+D40x that dont. Does that include the D60? I dont know. I used to have the D80, and its a fab camera!
If the D90 does come out, that should drive the D80 down further, but who knows when that will come out, or if its a rumour (im sure it isnt).

It does include the d60, those 3 cameras need af-s lenses as they have no af motor in the body

Well I have a D80 and love it. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend it and, as mentioned, when the replacement makes an appearance, the price of the D80 will drop.

Or wait for the D90 to come out and buy the D80 for a fraction of the price.

I've just got a D60 and really like it, as its my 1st DSLR I can't really comment on its merits vs a D80, however, on a couple of reviews I read, they said that If you had a D60, your next upgrade would be to the D200....ie not a D80 or any variants in between.
Hope this helps

Adam

The D60 is a glorified D40/D40x...the same plastic light weight body and cheap trims. Save yourself a lot of trouble and get the D80.

think i will get the D80 I've just been reading reviews of the D200 and the D80, think it might be wise to get the D80 and then put what i've saved towards some good glass

Theres been a rash of low count D200 sellers here, just lately.

I'd take a 2nd hand D200 for the same price as a new D80 most days, but thats just me.
but there is a certain security in new bought equipment...

If you want a secondhand D80 and save a bit more for your good glass (a sensible idea) I'm about to sell mine at £350, just over a year old and in fine condition, not had much use since I bought my D200 in March.
hmmmmm  tempting but what with the cash back offers that are floating about I think i'm going to go new, thanks for the offer though

interesting, hope to upgrade in this direction one day (maybe next year now though)

camera price buster has it up for £469.99

the D200 £639 might be able to stretch to that , be tight though

You can get a D200 for £450 now. A few have gone on this forum for around that price.

And I know of a mint one for sale, right now, who's owner has just been mugged by Jessops for the cost of a spanky-new D300;)

*cough*look at my sig*cough*

On a serious, not-plugging-my-sale note, a 2nd hand D200 is the same price as a new D80, and you will be seriously impressed at the difference in feel. I went D50 --> D80 --> D200 over the space of 3 years, and I really wish I missed the D80 out, and went straight for the D200...

The D80 is still a "consumer" DSLR, the D200 is very much a "semi-pro". The weatherproofing alone makes it worth it...

The D90 (if it's called that) will mostly likely be a smaller D300, much like the D200 and D80. This is my personal opinion.

The D80 is better than the D60, mainly due to the AF but also I think it has a fair few more features and technical specs advantage over the D60.

Main point is the D60 has no internal AF motor, like the D40/D40x... Like most camera ranges, as you go up the range, you get more, and better features...
