Ok as advised I went to the shop to try and decide which DSLR to get. Having spoken to people on here I had narrowed my choices down to the D5000 and 500D. The Guy in the shop has put another suggestion into the mix though. What are peoples thoughts on the Pentax K-x? I know most people on here seem to have either Cannon or Nikon but the Pentax seems to have alot of bonuses and a better price.

Where is the Catch??

people tend to suggest canon or nikon because they have used it for long time. I would seriously look at the pentax. the built quality seems to be very, very nice and the camera looks like a camera should look like. the same with the sony a850, a900 - but that's another price league.

When compared to the Canon and Nikon in tests the Pentax falls slightly short BUT it's still a damn good camera and I wouldn't mind one myself. Would I actually spend my own money on one...nope, I'd have Nikon or Canon!

I think that just about every Pentax lens ever made fits the K-x so you have an abundance of cheap good quality manual focus lenses that you can use.

First post so dont shoot me down....
....I'm afraid I'd advise against the k-x. Purchased one from Currys last month at their bargain price with a discount code, turned up prompty. Initially images seemed ok but on closer inspection discovered they were all slightly soft. Thought it was me at first but after various settings discovered that the SR (shake reduction) was actually creating blur! Images were sharper when setting turned off. This appears to be a common issue with Pentax k-x, maybe the k-r will be problem free. Have a search on google and see for yourself. Camera returned to Currys with no issues, now saving for an extra month for the D5000.
