Nikon (kindly) decided that the D5000 would not have flash commander mode. (A useful feature of the old D70 :( ).

Now I know that the SU-800 would do this job nicely, but since that isn't the budget option what are my other (more bank manager friendly) options (thier benefits and downsides).

I presently have 1 SB800, but this might change in the future.

I really just want the option to operate the flash off camera to allow a little bit more creativity in lighting the subject.

Thanks

You can still trigger your SB800 in SU-4 mode from the flash on the D5000 or alternatively invest in a set of radio triggers, such as the RF602, YN-04 or PT-04

I will have to dig out the manual and readup on SU-4 Mode

I'm guessing that using triggers will require manually setting the SB800

Thanks
