i have the d500 + d750 just now
i have been toying with selling the d500 for a d810
will there be a big jump in image quality or not that you would notice ?
anyone had the d500 and d810 ?

The D810 will give you better image quality than the D500, for a start it is FX but it is also one of, if not, the best of Nikon cameras for image quality ... what you will lose is the superb AF.

Yes the d810 has noticeably better IQ and noise performance.

The d500 was incredibly bad value for money unless you actually want 10fps, a never ending buffer and amazing AF and tracking

I'd keep the D500. As a pair with the D750, you have both Dx and Fx covered. OK, you won't have all the extra pixies that the 8xx series give you but I doubt you'd miss them more than you'd miss the extra seconds you'll spend transferring all the high pixie count files from card to 'puter if you go D8xx.

I'd hang onto the 750 and 500 until the 850 is in the wild. If the rumoured 46mp, 8-9 fps and decent buffer are true with the d5 af then subject to low light performance a pair of 850's and a lot of big cards might be the way to go. D810 not being discontinued so will only go lower in cost

Isn't the D850 rumoured to be around £4k Jim?

I was looking for a D500 to complement my D810 but I'm starting to think I might not need it. I shot my son's football game last night with the D810 and it performed very well. The files are big but then again you end up with half as many due to the frame rate. If you need more frames spend 50 quid on a grip and some AAs and get 7fps in crop mode. The iso performance was really good too.

Saying that I borrowed a mates D500 and with the same lens combo it was definitely getting sharper shots.

Much will depend on what your main use of the camera will be

I recently added a d500 to complement the d810. It was purely on the basis of wanting a faster frame rate for bird photography and some rugby and the d7100 i was pairing with the d810 doesnt have a buffer worth talking about.

Glad i did it as i cant blame kit and it's moved my photography along faster ( excuse the pun) than wondering if i was missing through technology or technique

Agree with depends what use you're putting it to. I will revert to d810 for perched birds but hit the d500 for moving

Also think af lock faster on the 500

The AF is noticeably quicker on the D500. I think you pretty much nail it when saying if you are shooting moving subjects get the D500. Having come from a 5diii and 7d2 I think the Nikon's have a better AF system

I have had three D750 and recently had the D810 and D500 running together for about six months, since getting the D500 the D810 was hardly used so I sold it. To me and for my wildlife uses, the D500 is the better camera overall for my use.

If it's to scratch an itch which it was for me, the D810 is an excellent camera and one I owned for just over a year and IMO is a better all round camera than the D750 and will pair nice with the D500.........so scratch the itch and see how you get on... If it doesn't work out, you can always sell on and buy a D750 again if you need FF.

Do you find the D500 or D750 good for all round? I have a D750 but thinking about a D500 instead as can't afford both. Trouble is my up and coming photography is a mixed bag!

A few equestrian events where the crop, FPS and speed of the D500 would be excellent BUT also going to be doing a lot more horse portrait work in the next few months.

I'm getting a 70-200 2.8 in next couple of weeks.

Hi JJ, Sorry for the late reply, I haven't been on-line much lately.

To answer your question, I thought you bought a D500 and returned it as you preferred the D750 IIRC?........They are both excellent cameras but if wildlife/speed is a priority the D500 is better IMO, whats the failings of the D750 you currently have if you're thinking of switching, or is it another itch;)

Was an itch! But thinking of using that itch to get a 70-200 2.8 iinstead!!!

Might be worth thinking about selling them both and buying an 850. It appears to do both jobs.
Looks ideal for JJ!

Too much for me, plus not sure it would be what I am after. D500 interests me for its speed and FPS and the D850 is 7FPS without grip so not much on the 750.

D500 price might fall a bit when 850 becomes available.

Sell them both and buy the D850 ;) The high MP allows you to crop to get the reach of the D500, with the grip you pretty much get the FPS of the D500, it has the same AF system, but you get the benefits of FF and what should be insanely good IQ. That being said, at £3499 it's more than you'd get for the D500 and D750 combined

But back to the main question is why would you sell the D500 and keep the D750 and D810. What would make more sense would be to sell the D750 and get a D810 and keep the D500. That way you have the D500 for sports and wildlife, and the D810 for absolute IQ.

For what uses?
And no, you most likely will not see a big improvement in IQ in most situations and for most uses. These days the main thing is, does a camera have a function/feature that allows you to do something easier/better/at all that another camera is limiting. The technical differences in IQ are rather minor, and if they exist at all it won't be apparent/available in all situations.
