Just a quick query if someone could help . .

I have a D80 camera with a few lenses and looking to buy a 'spare' body and I've spotted a D50 in the sales section. Will the Nikon lenses be interchangeable ?

Cheers
Andy

Yes, the D50 uses exactly the same lenses

The D50 is slightly smaller and doesn't have the front command wheel. It can flash sync up to 1/500 on camera or 1/4000 off (with a wee tweak), against 1/250 for the D80, oh and the delete buttons are in different places which can be a bit irritating :bonk:, but apart from that they are pretty similar

Main difference is the size of the sensor, in real life, I found it was difficult to tell the difference between images taken with the two in most circumstances. Both are superb cameras.
For fuller details, you want to look at the reviews here for D80 and here for D50 at dpreview.com

I love my D50 and would only upgrade to something like the D300! The only drawback for me personally is that I can't manually white balance.

re manual white balance i think you,ll find you can i have a D50 and use manual in difficult situations you use a grey card in the (pre) mode

You can do a manual pre-set with the D50, you can't manually set "5300K" or whatever.

I use a D300 and D50 as a backup. I don't really touch the D50 that often though. Still, a great camera with great low light performance.

Yes, I was aware of the presets, but I actually meant true manual white balance as stated by Blapto.

@dinorock:
What do you mean with using a grey card?

A few other differences between the D80 and D50...

Flash commander.
Viewfinder size.

Flash commander is useless if you're serious about it as it's just not reliable enough and distance is pretty bad. I recommend using triggers such as Elinchrom Skyports or PocketWizards (very expensive).

Thanks for the advise lads. I'm sure it will be fine as a second body, I'm a long long way off being a professional just yet.

I used to have a d50, great camera, and upgraded to a D70 (largely because I fancied the front wheel)

The D50 is 6.1 MP where as the D80 is 10mp.

Some would argue that was actually a downgrade especially when it comes to image noise, the D50 sensor is still one of the best Sony sensors out there when it comes to colour & noise performance. Nikon really over engineered the D50 as an entry level camera.

It's funny you say that because as much as I love my D50, I think the noise levels aren't that great if you go over ISO200... But it could be my lens and or filter. I'll post pic later!
