Hi Guys,

I am very new to Photography, and some of you may have already viewed my Introduction thread.

I am looking at buying my first DSLR in the future, and it seems that the D40 and the 400D are the main runners.

As I am a total noob, can you guys post your suggestions on the two, and let me know which you would buy and why?

Baring in mind that the D40 is £100 cheaper than the 400D.

Either really. The Canon guys will say buy the 400D, the Nikon guys will say the D40. The best advice is to get along to your local camera shop and handle both and see which feels most comfortable to you. I think perhaps the only (and it's slight) dint in the D40 is the problem with a few lenses not being compatible because it doesn't have an AF motor but I don't think that's a deal breaker.
 
I've just answered the same question elsewhere. This was my reply:

The problem with the D40x is that it can only auto-focus with lenses that have an auto-focus motor built into them. When you get any lenses, the Sigma lenses have to be HSM, and Nikon lenses have to be AF-S. Otherwise, you'll be manually focussing.

AF-S: This defines the lens has an internal focus motor. The Sigma equivalent is HSM. Sigma is a third party manufacturer that make lenses for all cameras. They make some excellent lenses, some as good as the main brand equivalents at half/third of the main brand prices.

A must have lens is a "nifty fifty." This is a 50mm lens. It's the sharpest lens available for any camera but no internal motor.

Canon are doing a lot of cash back deals on a fair bit of equipment so a good deal might be out there.
 
In regards to Shaks comment above, I assume that the 400D has Auto-Focus? I think I am going to be going for the 400D anyway :)

Yes, pretty hard to buy a camera these days that doesn't have AF...
 
Just a memory card, but I wouldn't get it from currys, Sandisk card can be had cheaply from play.com Sandisk Extreme 3 2Gb CF card

The camera itself can be had cheaper elsewhere

You could also try Kerso (on these forums or eBay)
 
As above, I wouldn't pay that price for it! If you want a high street retailer then I'd check with Jessops if they'll price match first.

In the past they have matched with internet suppliers from the main camera mags . . .

I got several hundred pounds off doing that! :clap:
 
The reason I would buy from Currys is that I can get a 10% discount, and I am still elligable for the £50 cash back.

With that in mind, surely Currys would be the best place to buy it from?

What is the warrenty on the 400D?

You will get a 12 month warrenty with a 400D if you buy it in this country (well, if it was originally purchased in England).

£420 is not particularly cheap for a 400D.

EDIT: Wait that's body only, but they have some good bundle deals on there. £440 with kit lens, Canon bag, 1gb memory card and UV filter. That's not bad actually.

Oh and eBay is cheaper than anywhere else. HOWEVER, alot of stuff on eBay are US imports (so the camera is actually called the Digital Rebel XTi instead of 400D. It's exactly the same, just the name is different. And i'm not sure about warrenties, might not be valid in the UK). But it's cheaper...by quite alot. I got my 400D on eBay with the kit lens and 4GB Kingston CF card for under £400.
