Thoughts on D3100..?

Anyone any experience of the Nikon D3100. I am looking to buy a DSLR, im a complete novice but will be planning on photographing the likes of motorsport between cars and bikes mainly.

What sort of lens should i be looking at, im thinking of buying the kit with the 18-55mm VR lens.

Any help would be fantastic...

Thanks

Well if your planning on motor sport then a 18-55 is going to be next to useless under most circumstances as I understand it from the motorsports guy and gals  you will been a fairly long focal length to be able to get the cars and bikes looking good

No experience on the camera I'm afraid I'm a canon man here :D

Great little camera. I use it as well as my d700 when I want to travel light. The kit lens is a good starter for general snapshots, but for more specialised tasks you need more specialised lenses.

Check out my photoix.co.uk website and YouTube channel for lots of d3100 how to videos.

It is a fantastic camera. The kit lens I find is great for landscape and urban shots. I also use the kit lens a lot for when I do star trails and lightpainting at night.

It has a great ISO performance as well. I will quite happily use it indoors with ISO 1600 taking photographs of my baby niece without flash (the flash scares her!).

One lens that should be at the very top of your shopping list would be the Nikon DX 35mm 1.8. It's the lens I use more often than not and as it is a prime it makes you work that little bit harder with composition.

A glowing endorsement from me

My seventeen year old son has the D3100, he also has the Nikkor 28-300 VR lens, which he find is perfect for all he needs from birding to wildlife to walkabout.

It has a slow fps rate but other than that don't underestimate the quality of the camera.

D3100 is quite light and quite small so would recommend holding one before purchase, I did however buy a Meike 3rd party grip for mine and it has improved the feel a lot, actually feel as if you are gripping the camera now.

Screen is a lower resolution than some and can seem a little pixelated after using the D7000 but overall a good camera and an excellent entry into DSLR's, guide mode will help to hold your hand until your ready for the manual modes. Recommended

DON'T be put off by the price the build quality is superb.

£20 on Amazon.

It is NOT plasticky, the catch and back are very well made and the build quality is well, how they do it for the price makes me wonder why it's so cheap other than cheap workers

Simpplyelectronics charge £50
