Hello all,

Im looking to get a new lens or two for my D3100. I currently have the kit lens 18-55mm. I was looking at a 70-300mm telephoto/macro lens for sports and macro, are they any good? Or do I need something different, it would probably be a sigma or tamron.

Also thinking of a nice F1.8 lens, either 35mm or 50mm for portraits. Which would work better on my camera?

Im new to all this so be nice ;)

Thanks for your help :)
Pete

The first lens I got for my D3100 was the 35mm f/1.8 and it's hardly ever off my camera now. Great little lens.

35mm and 50mm are same if you shoot outside. if you shoot indoors, remember that for 50mm lens you will need move away more from your object. so basicly 35mm better indoors. and both of them same outside.

hope it helps

50mm is fantastic, however do bear in mind you need the af-s one if you want it to autofocus, not the af-d. Unfortunately it is also more expensive.

Same applies to the 35mm.

Hello,
I 'm new here, usually mingling on AVF. Someone recommended TP, so here I am and I thought I might as well dive right in!...

The 35mm F/1.8 is a stunner.

I previously had the 50mm F/1.8 AF-D on my D7000 but I just found it too zoomed in for when I really needed it - indoors. Subjects always seemed too close and it's not always possible to move further back. As a result I got the 35mm AF-S instead.

Not only is the 35mm an excellent focal length for DX cameras, the AF-S is faster and smoother over the AF-D.

I own a number of lenses that already cover the 35mm range, but the IQ, speed, weight, and size of the 35mm AF-S is just excellent, and as per the previous poster, it rarely leaves the front of my camera. An awesome lens.

Never used the 70-300, but I hear it's a great lens and better than the 55-300. That's just what I hear though :)

Thanks for all your help guys,

Where the best place for 2nd had lenses?

Ive tried to access the for sale on here but even though im all verified it says I cant access it :(

Thanks

I had The Sigma 70-300mm DG Macro and found it soft at 300mm my Dad got a Sigma 70-300mm but got the top end version and it is really good. I like the others find the 50mm prime to be a bit long in doors at times. You can't access the for sale section on here yet due to the time you have been on here. The only place I have ever bought my camera equipment from is Camera World in Chelmsford and found them to be excellent.

The true answer of course is the place that has the item you want, but I know what you're getting at ;)

The 35mm AF-S is a pretty popular lens, so they get snapped up pretty quick when they appear 2nd hand. Best option is therefore to scout around a few of the mainstream camera dealers.

They are still relatively cheap at the new price IMO, so it's worth looking at new prices too, then using sites like topcashback or quidco to reap a little extra back. Have a look at http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/prod1013.html which will give you ideas of prices new, and some dealers to try for secondhand stock.

Thanks for all your help guys,

London Camera Exchange - several stores dotted around the country
Visit a big city, london has several (google search before you go)
Reading has lots of used camera stores...
Google camera stores near your area?
