No
just as i want to move on in photography i've seemed to of hit a wall! I cant find anyone with a D300 in stock for less the £999.99 and i really cant jusitfy spending that amount at the moment!

i feel so low! :'(

You don't need a D300 to move into photography, pick up a D40 with kit lens for less than £250 and get a nice lens with the saving.

[edit] removed some nikon stuff [/edit]

Or you could buy a proper camera and get a Canon :exit:

Having said that, I see the Op. currently has a D40, and wanted to upgrade,so my reply isn't applicable really.

What about a D90 or D200 :)

Looks like he already has a D40 and was wanting to move up a class in cameras. I can understand that completely as I recently did the same. The D40 can take some great pics but I found the limitation in lens choice frustrating and its poor high ISO performance and meager choice of focus points didn't help.

Have you considered the D90? It has a lot of the features the D300 has but is a fair whack cheaper?

Bloomin eck, how many replies in the time it took me to type mine!!!

ok now looking at the D90! would i be in the same place in say a years time wanting more?

Or buy a refurb Fuji S5 off the Fuji site for £411. they are exellent

Why do you need to upgrade out of curiosity?

The D90 would get my vote.

i was left wanting more with my D40X, i wanted a camera with a built in motor to, something the D40 hasn't (maybe thats the reason?)

i then got the D200 and was always happy with pics outdoors, motorsports and low ISO landscapes

but indoors i was never happy with higher ISO, i wanted more than that and settled for the D300, its something i cant see me upgrading in the next 2 years, always good to use and puts the D200 to shame in some aspects (IMO)

What is the camera used for out of curiosity? a D90 or D300 would be the way to go IMO

Whoa! I didn't realise that! A few weeks ago, Jessops were doing the D300 for just under £900, and the D700 for just above £1500! They've since gone up to £999 and £1799!

I upgraded from a d40 to a d90 last week. It was absolutely the right move for me. Has opoend up a whole new world of usability. I had the nifty fifty which I hardly ever used with the D40 cos it didnt auto focus. On the d90 I havn't taken it off cos the combination of auto ISO and being able to get good results at iso 1600 (or even 3200) turns my 50mm into a point and shoot all purpose low light lens. Huge difference. And thats just an added bonus really as the main reason I got the d90 was to provide a better starting point for my lens upgrades for travel/landscaping.

You wont regret the D90. Can get them for £600ish in stock now. Same IQ as the d300.......job done

Where are you looking to go with your photography? Shiny new gear is always nice, I admit, but there are loads of options open to you.

You can buy new - D80, D90 or D300. If speed is not of great importance, a Fuji S5 Pro is a fantastically well-regarded camera.

Or you can buy used - plenty of dealers, or privately. The D80 is still a good camera, as is the D200 (Aperture had one recently at £330, Park has one at just under £400) You will get more creative control at your fingertips, and save a packet in the meantime.

That's the way I went, from a D50, to a D80, then D200 and now a D300...

i was in the same boat, i'd used my d40 and d50 well, and wanted to step up to the next level in terms of high iso etc so went for the D90 (paid £600 from jessops back in november). Great camera, and my 50mm is hardly off it, the video function is loads of fun too!

Hard to say without knowing what your issues with the D40 are. The D90 is a very well specced camera, with pretty much any features you are likely to require. The only real reason I can see to upgrade in the future is if you wish to go Full Frame or a new version comes out with even better high ISO performance (if that is something you currently require).

Ebay is your friend. Body only should fetch £150. :)

I'd be surprised if they still made that much, a new kit with the 18-55 is only (even after the price increases) £243, the lens is about £60 worth, making a new body only £180.

I'd have grabbed that offer of £130....but that's just me ;)

This will probably make the OP feel even worse but I was wanting a D300 for months and I was constantly looking around for the lowest prices then a few weeks ago I saw one in sale in Jessops for £740. It had been bought and returned by a customer but had been checked by Nikon and came with the full 12 month guarantee. I had to snap it up there and then. I was well chuffed.

Keep looking around and you too may get a bargain like I did.

well i went for the D90 in the end!!!

so far so good even though i have had it for 24 hours. It's a big jump from the d40 in all areas!

if anyone has an hints and tips for the set then let me know!

Sit down with a nice cup of tea and read the manual ;)

You don't hang around :)

I upgraded from the D40 to the D90 just before Christmas. It's like learning all over again! A great camera though and so much more scope, the number of focus points alone is great. I can only echo what others have said above. I bought an 18-200 VR lens and also the 50mm. The nifty fifty has hardly left the body! Love it.

Am just trying to get used to the auto ISO thing at the moment. Will be magic once I can master it.
