D300 or D200

D300 has better ISo performance for starters

been looking at upgrading to a D300 of late but not so sure its what i want to do (from a D200) so going for another lens in the meantime. the D200 is a cracking camera but at higher ISO its let down slightly, whereas the D300 is fantastic (going from pics i have seen on here)

Agreed - if you plan to be using high ISO stuff regularly [indoor sports, etc] then D300 will be very rewarding despite the price tag. It also has more focus points [frankly, sometimes its too many], and has a few in-camera editing options that I never reallly use, live view - again, useful but only on are occasions as it uses batteries more intensively and I prefer the viewfinder, and 3d focus tracking - a feature i havent yet really had time to figure out. Oh there is also an inbuilt sensor clean function but as my sensor has shown no signs of dust yet I cant say how good it is.

The d200 is incredibly flexible and useable and a great piece of kit but is let down when high ISO comes into play. Not a problem if you are only going to be using it occasionally and there is plenty of good Noise reduction software available to deal with most of it.

Consider what ou will be doing with the camera then decide which is best for you - in terms of physical handling they are almost identical - a couple of buttons have moved on the 300 but overall very similar.

i upgraded from the D200 to the D300, cant say i regret it one bit. I can acheive better results at iso3200 on the D300, than i did at iso800 on the D200.

I have both, use them and like them both. The 300 I use mainly for wildlife/action stuff and the 200 for just about everything else.

Usually I would suggest that of the two the D200 and a good lens would be better but looking at your kit the D300 would be a good choice as you already appear to have some decent lenses.

The D200 is a good camera it's just the D300 is a whole step up (certainly in High ISO).

I went from a D200 to a D300 and found the step up a good one.

This having been said, I've not put the D300 thru its paces fully.

The D200 is a great camera too ***.

I say - if you can afford the D300, go for it.
