D300 FIRMWARE

Didn't know there was a recent one ?

Not yet, I downloaded it to find they have compressed it with Stuffit which I dont have so now downloading on my windows machine

Link doesn't work for me.

Do you have to install all the previous updates first? Or simply install this update?

I have any way justs asking about this one.

so go on tell all is it worth it

I have read that it can make focusing faster that’s my main thing for action.

Took me about 2 mins to actually do the update - not really a lot of effort.

If it improves focus performance at all I cant really complain

I hope so I will try it tonight

Same question as above anyone please, also is there anything else it actually does apart from make focusing faster, and can anyone actually confirm it really does

There seems to be a few good things been changed:

  • The range of settings available for ISO sensitivity settings > ISO sensitivity auto control > Minimum shutter speed in the shooting menu has been increased from 1/250 – 1 s to 1/4000 – 1 s.
  • A Copyright information item has been added to the setup menu. When Copyright information is enabled, the copyright symbol (©) is shown in the shooting info display.
  • Focus acquisition performance in dynamic-area AF mode has been improved.
  • Focus acquisition performance with contrast-detect AF has been improved.
  • Auto white balance performance has been improved.

Plus a host of other tweaks and bug-fixes...

Alasdair,

Thank you for the summary listing. For me, the (c) is good enough reason to upgrade. Seems like I'll do that over the weekend.

It's worth it - it's free - focus is faster! Auto ISO is now like it should be.

so er........ where would I get the update from? do I have to pay for it? can a complete idiot (ie - me!) manage this? In other words.....HELP!!!!

Just did the update. AF is much faster and seems to acquire more AF points in 51 point AF. Well worth the update!

Great, thanks GoLotus and Mart61, speedier AF is always a nice welcome ...

Now I wish I did the upgrade before I went out to shoot today as I was doing some BIF and the faster AF would have been very helpful.

It's forecast for a sunny day on Saturday, it seems I will do the upgrade before then and go out for more BIF.

Do EXACTLY as it says in the instructions - note the points above - only try to upgrade A then B - not both together - it is simple - but follow the instructions.

Mart61,

Again, thank you for posting that link to the upgrade guide. Very useful and makes it so easy to do . I just did the upgrade which took no more than a few minutes.

still not convinced.......

I'm bound to mess it up  :(

ive just upgraded mine tonight........

On the menu to select FPS for the CL mode, was it always 1fps through to 7fps, or did it end at 6fps.... ?

And just to confirm i can still get 8fps with no grip too.

For some reason, I can't seem to update firmware A, I've done B but cannot do A!

Firmware A is 1.02
Firmware A is 1.10

Ok, problem sorted.

Can't have both files on the card whilst updating, deleted B and now managed to update A

yep - if you read the instructions . . .

Glad you got it sorted!

Does anyone know if this update stops the 8fps without the battery grip hack as seen here

By using this hack to get 8fps can it in anyway damage the camera ?, and i'm assuming if so the warranty would be void, anyone know

Its not a hack, its just a set of configurable options - nothing on the camera is updated.

Basically you set the camera to flash exposure bracketing, single shot mode and set one of the buttons to bracket burst and dont pop up the flash, set the camera to bracket 9 shots and then press bracket burst and the shutter and bobs your uncle.

I personally wouldnt do it much - I believe the main reason its normally disabled is the drain on the battery - have heard it can really make it a bit toasty!

I don't want to take this thred off topic, but I am very curious as how did anyone findout all the settings that need to be set to get to the 8fps workaround?

Sorry bad choice of words on my part.

SuperCNJ,

Thanks, but I wasn't asking how it was done; rather, I was just curious how was it discovered? How did the first person figure out the combination of things to press and do to get to this 8fps? Afterall, this wasn't documented in anything from Nikon, and someone had to "stumble" onto it !?
