Hello

I am using the D300 with my Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8G lens lately in my last 50 shots i have had a black spot keep appearing in each picture. Strangely enough it only happens when i use the flash, if i turn off the flash and take a picture its not there but more strangely is when i do use the flash and zoom in to 28mm the black spot goes

I have cleaned the lens and used the D300’s tool to clean the sensor but the problem is still there

Please help as i really don’t know what else to do or try

Pictures below took of my ceiling to show you

Thanks for your time

youve forgot to put the picture up

It looks like shadow being caused by the flash catching your lens / or lens hood.

Chris :)

Are you referring to the shadow at the bottom of the picture? If so, that looks like a shadow from the lens hood.

Apologies if not....

If you are talking about the black half oval at the bottom of the picture it is a shadow cast by the lens hood of your lens the reason it goes at 28mm is that the shadow is outside the field of view of the lens. Hope that explains it OK.

oh b****r I type to slow. :bang::bang::bang:

Maybe not as this would then be on the top of the pic

I can only see 1 pic and the 2nd is a red cross jobbie.

Chris :)

looks like lens hood shadow to me try one with the lens hood off or adjust the flash to its minimum or max

the flash sits on top so would pick it up at bottom of pic

its clearly broken but if you just pop the body in the post ill give it a good home

Yup, thats your lens hood!

Take it off if you are using wide and flash...

Hello

Thank you very much for the fast responses

I am not actually using it with the lens hood all i have is the lens and a hoya filter which i have tried removing and still the shadow is there

I have just took another 2 pictures one of my floor and one of my door which clearly shows the shadow

If you right click the picture you should be able to view the met data which might be of some help

Any more ideas?

Thanks

Quite, the 24-70 is quite physically long and 24mm is quite wide... of course you are going to see it...

Maybe a proper flash would fix it? The angle from the pop up flash will be quite low by comparison.

Or just work out where it shows up and not go that wide if you need to use the flash.

Definately looks like a shadow issue to me - the 24-70 is quite a big lens isn't it? Could it just be the shadow from the lens itself?

Does it get worse (IE a larger black area) when zoomed out (at 24mm) - try taking a shot at 24, 28, 35 etc and see if the area moves out of the way.

Do you have access to another lens to try?

if your lens is set to 24mm use the zoom function on the flash to 24 and vice versa

Ok

Here are 2 more this time of my red wall

One is taken at 24mm and the other at 28mm

Its still there at 28mm but just not as much

I am using the Nikon popup flash however i do have the Speedlight SB-900 which i will go and get now and post the results

Thanks

28mm

It is the lens casting a shadow ... I've had it happen to me with the same lens / body, made me thank the All Mighty that I hate using flash in the first place :p

Check this out:

Ok

I have just tried using the SB-900 and i can confirm when i use this flash the shadow goes at 24mm

I guess that’s one easy fix bit of a pain as most of the time i just like to take it out the bag and start shooting without attaching the SB-900 as it’s pretty big and heavy. I find the time you spend attaching the flash you end up losing your shot in the end

Thanks again for everyone’s help :)

exactly same shot but with hood removed check exif to prove its the shadow from hood

And mine are wit a rocket launcher stuck on (Tamron 70-200f2.8 lol)

Yep that is the same as mine

Can someone tell me why they bother making a lens that can shoot at 24mm if you cannot actually shoot at 24mm with the on-board flash without having shadows in your pictures?

If you are using the set up you have then onboard flash is worthless you should be using either a studio setup or like you have a pro flashgun

 because they assume anyone with enough money to buy the 24-70 probably also has the money to buy a decnt flash gun instead of the piddly useless on board flash?

Seriously, the on board is really for emergencies and if you want good quality lenses, then you have to deal with the size of them. Give me a 24-70 and no onboard flash anytime...;)

Now then, anyone want some salt to go with that popcorn? :naughty:

Maybe they make it for people who don't want to use the on-board flash?
